Why My English Teacher Wanted To Be Baptized In Jesus Name!
Ms. DeGroote, as she wished to be called, was from France and she taught my senior year English class at South Bend Central High. She was 63 and referred to herself as a spinster. We had more creative names for her. Most of the students dreaded her classes. We were taught diction and enunciation with a heavy French accent. It seemed to make learning to speak proper English an impossibility with her as the instructor. By much effort I received the only A in her class both semesters.
My class was filled with Catholic students. South Bend, Indiana still is a predominately Catholic town. Its claim to fame is the University of Notre Dame. I was the only non-Catholic in the class.
Ms. DeGroote was a stern woman who tolerated no-nonsense in any of her classes. I was highly confined in her restrictive and controlled environment.
During the course, we had many weeks of conjugation and diagramming sentences. Somehow the nerd in me found those subjects easy and interesting. No, that is not normal, but it happened nevertheless. (I knew I was a nerd and not a geek, because geeks make more money than nerds.)
One day Ms. DeGroote said, “Now students, tomorrow I want you to bring to class a sentence or sentences that you have diagrammed. You may go to the board and diagram your sentence, and I will correct your paper. Or, I will go to the board and diagram your sentence while you correct the paper.
For the life of me, I could not think of a sentence to diagram. Especially since the whole class would see. Then it dawned on me. What better sentence in the world to diagram! I went home, picked up my Bible, and copied Mt. 28:19 down. I proceeded to diagram the verse. This just had to be right.
The next day couldn’t come soon enough. I was ready for class. When 3rd period English finally arrived I knew I would be the second one called on. Everything in the class was by alphabet. Even our seating was arranged that way. I set behind Adams. We were all called by our last names.
When Adams was called on, he went to the chalkboard and almost got his correct. Ms. DeGroote sat at his empty desk and corrected his paper while he was at the board. When he finished, I heard “Ballestero!”
“I would like you to go to the board and diagram my sentence, and I will correct my own paper,” I said to Ms. DeGroote.
She said, “Read me your sentence.”
“It’s a Bible verse, if that’s OK,” I ventured.
She nodded and I read my Scripture.
Matthew 28:19 (KJV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
“Go ye therefore (comma)” I said.
Ms. DeGroote prefaced her work with a (you) in front of the word “Go”.
When I read the verse aloud, I paused on the word “name,” while I waited for her to catch up.
“Of the Father,” I said.
“Now, here we have a prepositional phrase modifying the word name. At this point we do not know yet what the name of the person is, but we do know by this prepositional phrase, that whoever this person is, they are a Father,” she said.
She then drew the appropriate lines on her diagram.
“Of the Son,” I continued.
“Now we know, that this person is both a Father and a Son, but we still don’t have a name.”
“Ms. DeGroote,” a girl named Williams called out with her hand in the air. “Aren’t Father and Son names?”
“They’re just descriptive titles. They tell us something about the name, but they don’t tell us His name, they are only titles.” was her answer.
She again drew the second prepositional phrase on the board.
“Of the Holy Ghost.” I continued.
After the 3rd prepositional phrase was in place, my teacher looked carefully at the diagram on the board from end to end. She shook her head. “All we know here is that whoever this person is, they are a Father, a Son, and they are the Holy Ghost! But we still don’t know what the name is.”
“Martyn,” she said looking at me carefully, “What is the name?”
I had been waiting for this moment. I stood, and gently said, “Jesus is the name!”
Ms DeGroote looked at her writing on the board. Then she turned back to me with her arms wide in surrender. With a heavy French accent, my Catholic English teacher said, “I guess I need to be baptized in Jesus name!”
“Yes!” I said as I pulled my upraised clinched fist down from my chin area. The other 30 students in the class clapped. I did a modest jig in the class aisle myself.

Thank You sooooo much for your Testimony. You came to preach for our church Tacoma UPC. And I had just got baptized in Jesus Name and I really didn’t understand about the titles versus Jesus name. So I asked God many times to give me the revelation of his name. Well low and behold, he sent you to our church and it was in the service you gave this testimony. Brother It saved my life and gave me what I had been asking God for. It was like a light bulb clicked and glory be to God I got it. I held on to that testimony abd told it everywhere I went and how God revealed it to me about his name baptizism. God sent you there for little oh me to save that which was lost. The foolishness of preaching. Thank you brother for allowing God to use you. I was just browsing one day on the Pentecostal site and I could’nt tell you how I ended up here but I did and what did I see your blog about what you had preached to our church about two years ago. I screamed and hollered for my mother to see this. Thank you again.

This is one of the strongest points to disprove the doctrine of the Trinity. If Yahweh put on a human suit and lived among us, do we have to split Him up into three persons in order to explain it? The reason the Trinity is not found in the Bible is, the doctrine was written about 250 years after the Bible! And not by inspired Jewish apostles, but by pagan Romans in 325 AD, council of Nicea. Actually it is.
1 Thessalonians chapter 4, where it says we are “caught up together,” in the Greek is “Harpazo” but in the Latin Vulgate it’s “rapturo” . Nonetheless, whether a word is in the Bible or not does not establish whether a doctrine he is in the Bible.
Most trinitarians I meet come amazingly close to the truth of the one mighty God IN Christ than they realize and that many Oneness folk give them credit for. But once they start to slip into the thought process and terminology of “separate and distinct persons” they slip into an error introduced approximately 1800 years ago. It’s hard to let go of what most of Christianity has held on to for that long.
But baptism, as the apostles demonstrated all throughout the book of Acts is easy to see. The APOSTLES themselves either got it horribly wrong, or as the article above and the book of acts demonstrated, they did it right.
I have found that baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ easy for folks to see in the book of acts, and if they will OBEY IT rather than tradition, their obedience seems to let God open their eyes to the Oneness, or as I prefer, The Mighty God in Christ. Obedience to the scriptures opens one up to more from God.

Now I know why you write so well–thanks to Ms. DeGroote, Our daughter posted this on FB, and it drew me like a magnet. Wow! This is one of the best stories I have ever read in my life. Of course, it is impactful to us since we know you and your family; this story is true; and it happened here in our town. What a creative way to share the truth of the gospel with your English teacher!
Another favorite of mine is the Buffalo Hunter one. Though I didn’t know she was a buffalo hunter at the time, we ABI.students loved it when. Bro. Gleason’s sister, Sis. Connie Ballestero, and her husband came to minister there.

I had called a professor at UND to diagram Matt 28:19 for me. He did and after he gave it all to me I said so what you are telling me we need to find out what his name is. He said yes but everyone does it in the name of the father and the son and the Holy Ghost so don’t worry web out it. Well I didn’t think that was a wise suggestion.

My aunt was a teacher in Columbus, Ohio. She was visiting us in Morgantown, IN. She attended a revivals service with us . Our Asst Pastor asked her diagram this scripture. When she finished she asked to be baptized on Jesus name. Not only she but her sister and mother joined her. After praying for over 30 years for them, doing this opened their understandings. This brings back so many memories. I used to LOVE diagramming sentences as a young man. It is delightful to see the lessons of language being brought into the work of the Lord. Let EVERYTHING that has breath give Him praise, in every way. The marvelous thing about this is that it transcends language barriers. The relationships among words in languages are in many ways universal. The relationship of a subject to an adjectival prepositional phrase can be communicated in any language. Someone asked about the grammatical names of the sentence parts. “baptizing” (verb) “them” (indirect object) “in the name” (adverbial prepositional phrase modifying ‘baptizing’), “of the Father”, (adjectival prepositional phrase modifying “name” (‘name is the object of the preposition, ‘in’, which is defined by the DEFINITE article, ‘the’)), “and” (conjunction, linking the 1st adjectival prepositional phrase with the second adjectival prepositional phrase) “of the son” (adjectival prepositional phrase modifying ‘name’, ‘son’ being the object of the preposition, ‘of’, ‘son’ also modified by the DEFINITE article ‘the’), “and” (conjunction, linking the 2nd adjectival prepositional phrase with the third adjectival prepositional phrase) “of the Holy Ghost” (adjectival prepositional phrase modifying ‘name’, ‘Holy Ghost” being the object of the preposition, ‘of’, ‘Holy Ghost’ also modified by the DEFINITE article ‘the’). “Holy” may also be treated as a separate adjective but in the sentence construction, “Holy Ghost” is probably best taken as a unit, a unique title, so the sentence diagram above may be taken as correct, ‘Holy” treated as part of the object of the preposition. One interesting lesson in this little romp through sentence diagramming concerns these definite articles. Indefinite articles are not being used. The name that is being modified here belongs to a PARTICULAR Father (not just “A” Father, but “THE” Father. This name also belongs to a PARTICULAR son, not just any old son, not “a” son, but “THE” son”. Finally, this name belongs to a PARTICULAR Spirit referred to as “THE” Holy Spirit, not “A” Spirit or “A” Holy Spirit, as if such a thing were able to be considered at all.

Another relationship that is interesting to see here in Matthew 28:19 has to do with the juxtaposition of “teach” and “baptizing”. It is apparent in the construction “teach all nations, baptizing them” that the way we are to teach the nations is by baptizing them”. That makes sense, since an approach which doesn’t involve baptizing the “nations” would prove unfruitful, that is, if it were to omit baptism in the Lord’s name.as we teach. Why teach the nations at all if we omit to baptize them in the name of the Lord?

With so many intelligent, educated people in places of importance, why can’t everyone “see” the truth of that scripture. Most jump on that one to try to prove the “threeness” of the “oneness” when it is so blatantly clear. “Name” does not have an “s” making it plural: it is singular! I have always wished that Matthew had added, “Which is Jesus.” It would have made our lives so much easier.

Another thing that “blows the Trinity out of the water” is “The Holy Ghost overshadowed Mary and she conceived…” God the father could not possibly be the “Father” of Jesus because the “Holy Ghost” is the one which impregnated Mary. It clearly states that in the Scripture. Go Figure! LOL (As they say!)

Another question to ask Trinitarians is: “So, if Jesus commanded the disciples to: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” we’re they being disobedient? Because every time they baptized someone, the bible says they did it in the name of The Lord Jesus, or the name of The Lord.

I have enjoyed reading this entire post. I’ve never questioned the Jesus Name baptism. Do you remember visiting the church in Twin Lakes, GA., along with your parents years ago? I’ll never forget their wonderful singing “The Life Boat” and others and the lovely, joyful spirit of your mother. Both she and her brother, Bro. Gleason shared that same overflowing joy of the Holy Ghost. I actually have family pictures of you all while visiting there.

Bless you for this!!! Bless your teacher for her humility to God’s TRUTH!!! (I have taught public school for over 20 years so, you know I could relate! When I read your title I KNEW IMMEDIATELY what had to happen (there was no way around it!). I belong to a pastor’s group on Facebook and will share this with them as well! Tge scary thing is whenever you run across people who actually end up being more dedicated and faithful to the norms of their denomination and church tradition than to The Word of God itself.
I always say, “I must follow TRUTH… For truth will always lead me deeper into Christ Jesus!”

Wow, this is fantastic! Why couldn’t I be more like you? I’ve known this nearly all oft life, got the Holy Ghost and was baptized in the name of Jesus at age 8. This is all thanks to Kenneth Landtroop witnessing to my parents years ago.
I’ve never seen it broke down like this….
