She’s Not PLU

She’s Not PLU

Two proud ladies sat talking talked in confidential tones about a newcomer in their small town while in the presence of a local official.

“She’s not PLU,” said the first lady to the man.

“PLU?” He asked with a wrinkle in his brow.

“Yes, PLU. People Like Us.” She gave a knowing smirk of superiority and leaned back in her chair satisfied with her belief that she was the better person.

*This incident may not be common conversation in everyone neighborhood, but the Bible shows us that it truly has been a problem for thousands of years.

In Biblical Times

One Of The First Instructions To Israel After They Exited From Egypt Was How To Treat The Non-Believers That Chose To Live Among Them.

Leviticus 19:34 But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

God reminded Israel, that if anyone should know what it felt like to be the one that doesn’t fit in, it should be them.

“Love him as thyself,” was the Lord’s commandment!

Jesus Repeated That Commandment To His Followers.

He told them it was the second greatest commandment. If the subject had to be revisited by Him after 4,000 years, then why should we think that it is not needed today?

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mark 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Some that heard Jesus that day didn’t really feel comfortable having anyone mess with their PLU Club. Their response was, “Who is my neighbor?”

Remember The Story Of the Good Samaritan?

Luke 10:29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

Luke 10:30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

Luke 10:31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

Luke 10:34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

Luke 10:35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

Luke 10:36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

The Priest wouldn’t help him.

The Levite wouldn’t help him.

The one that helped him was someone that was not PLU.

Remember The Uncomfortableness In The Religious Caste System When Jesus Ate With Sinners?

The inner circle only approved of Jesus talking and visiting with other PLU.

Luke 15:2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.Simon “The Leper” Threw A Religious Hissy Fit When Mary Washed His Feet.

Luke 7:39  Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

Simon was a LEPER and he was honored by the Lord’s presence. Yet, he could not believe that Jesus would tolerate the likes of someone like Mary. She’s not PLU.

Jesus never showed anger at a sinner. He did show much displeasure with the self-righteous who tolerated no one that wasn’t PLU.

Jesus Tried To Abolish The PLU Club. He Told Stories That Illustrated His Feelings.

The King’s Son’s Wedding.

Matthew 22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.

Matthew 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

Luke 14:21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

*The King ordered his servants to bring in whomever they could, even if they were not PLU.

Richman And Lazarus

Luke 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

Luke 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

Luke 16:21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs, which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

Luke 16:23  And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Luke 16:24  And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

Luke 16:25  But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

Luke 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they, which would pass from hence to you, cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

Luke 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:

Luke 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

Luke 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

Luke 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

Luke 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Why Did The Richman Go To Hell?

What Sin Did The Richman Commit? I’m Not God, You’re Not God. But It Would Appear That The Greatest Accusation Against The Richman Was His Abhorrence Of Those That Were Not PLU.

It Was Said Of Jesus: “He Saved Others”

Do we reach out to the ‘others’ in our town? Or, do we only try to connect with PLU?

The Last Communication From John The Baptist In Prison Required That Jesus Give Proof That He Was The Messiah.

Luke 7:20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

Luke 7:21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

Luke 7:22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

*The proof that Jesus sent back to John, was that the Door was now open to those who were not PLU

The Last Words Of Jesus To His Disciples Was About PLU And Those That Were Not PLU.

Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Luke 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things.

Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

The Holy Ghost Was To Be For Everyone. Not Just PLU.

Even Peter initially struggled with the concept of salvation being for those that were not PLU. God had to give him an attitude adjustment before he went to preach to Cornelius.

They Continued Steadfastly

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

The whole New Testament church fellowshipped together regularly. No one was left out. They socialized together. Everyone was included.

We lock our doors.

We have passwords.

We have different Sororities.

We have different Fraternities.

We have different Gangs.

We have different Neighborhoods.

We have different Clubs.

We have Clicks.

We have Pecking Orders.

We have snobs.

We have bigots.

We have racists.

We are afraid of all those that are not like us.

Organizations And Independents

Some Organization have little acceptance of Independents.

Some Independents have little acceptance of Organizations.

Some Organizations have little acceptance of other Organizations.

Some Organization’s members often do not speak to those that are not PLU.

Some Independents return the favor.

Some church members have tried to ignore members of another church at the mall and restaurant.

Some churches would prefer that those of a different ‘race’ go to another church.

Why Is that?

God only has one Race… The Human Race.

God only has one Church Body.

He doesn’t have a white church, a black church, a Hispanic church or an Asian church.

He just has one church.

These Card Carrying Members Of The Local PLU Club:

Resist and Hinder Apostolic Revival.

Bring a spirit of strife and cause confusion in the church.

Exhibit the spirit of a Pharisee.

Create clicks with PLU and share negative opinions about others.

Make others feel unwelcome and unwanted.

Destroy unity in the church and thereby stop revival.

I Am Not Talking About Holiness Minded People, Compromising Their Beliefs.

I Am Talking About Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ, Loving Every Sinner And Every Saint.

What I Am Talking About Is Opening Our Arms And Our Church Doors To Those That Are Hurting And Need God.

In Every Local Hospital.

There are some wealthy people sick in bed there.

There are some poor people there too.

There are some that are educated and some that are illiterate.

There are some homeowners and some homeless.

The door to the Emergency Room is never locked.

Every hurting, bleeding and desperate person is welcomed and attended to.

That Is How The Church Should Be.

Loving the unlovable

Caring for those who can’t take care of themselves.

Helping those that need direction.

We are a spiritual hospital.

Matthew 25:40 …Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

  2. This article tops the charts Elder. Reminds me of the story I told you just the ther day when in my home church when the intoxicated man accidentally wandered into our church. The saints were frightened because he wasn’t PLU said, go get brother McKinney, he used to be like that, he’ll know what to do. I fully remember the time I was not in the group of the “PLU”. The rest of the story with the intoxicated man was I spent an hour witnessing to him, then drove him home and spent another hour witnessing to him and his wife then having them both on their knees praying in their home. By God’s wonderful Grace I don’t ever want to forget where HE brought me from. From not being a church “PLU” to being accepted in the beloved and being/striving to be a “PLH” (People Like Him).

  5. Thanks for this humble reminder about how we should think and who we should be like as a christian, as a person. PLU’s have no place in my life.
