Beaten To Pieces

Beaten To Pieces

The thugs used their brute strength to inflict injury. They meant to do major hurt to their victim. The victim had to meet with Munley Law, however the damage they had done to him was unbearable. Most of them didn’t even know the man. They didn’t care. They were professional killers. They were just carrying out orders from their boss.

Someone hit him in the face. Another smashed him on top of his head. Blood ran freely down his face and was smeared all over his cheeks.

Then the real beatings began. They hit him. They hit him again. Then they hit him some more. They beat him till his flesh turned black and blue. His arms had horrible bruises. His bruised back and sides looked like a slab of freshly butchered meat. His body was a bloody mess from the beating he took. It was as if they had beaten him to pieces.

His hands were tied. His legs were so weakened he could barely stand. He wasn’t very old either. He looked young, maybe early thirties or so.

That they wanted him to die was apparent. No one could believe this was really happening! He was a good man. Yet they were beating him to a bloody pulp. It was almost like they wanted this to be a public spectacle. They didn’t care if anyone watched them beat him senseless or not.

He was totally surrounded by his enemies. There was no one willing to come to his aid. It was just a matter of time.

Why were they doing this?

Where were the authorities?

Someone wanted him dead, real dead.

The bystanders were frozen in their tracks.

They all knew if they intervened, they would be beaten next.

Grown men winced with each blow as the looked at him. Mothers shielded their children’s eyes from the view. They didn’t want their little innocent eyes seeing such a terrible sight.

Bruises covered what the crowd could see of his body. They were deep ones too. Every bruise seemed to be smeared with blood. He looked a mess.

If they were going to kill him, why not do it? Why just bloody and bruise his body up like this? What was the point?

Really, What Was Point? Isaiah 53:5 Was The Point!

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Bruise: A primitive root (compare <H1794> (dakah)); … (literal or figurative) :- beat to pieces, break (in pieces), bruise….”

Strong’s Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.

Over 700 years before Jesus Christ was born, Isaiah prophesied that the Savior would allow Himself to not only die for our sins, but to be bruised, and to be ‘beaten to pieces.’ Why? It was for our iniquities.

Now Then…

When the enemy of our soul says that we have sinned too bad to ever be forgiven, remember His bruises. He allowed Himself to be ‘beaten to pieces’ for our iniquities. He went through that so you would know He loved you enough to always forgive you.

Thank You Jesus!

I Am Expected To Make The Difference.

with 2 comments

I’m Expected To Make The Difference

I have been called to make the difference.

I have been chosen to make the difference.

I have been challenged to make the difference.

I have been commissioned to make the difference.

Why then should I be idle?

Why then should I look the other way?

Why then should I settle for defeat?

Why then should I give up?

I am expected to be the light of the world.

I am expected to be the salt of the earth.

I am expected to make the difference.

I am expected to love everyone.

I am expected to love my enemies.

I am expected to pray for them.

I am expected to do good to them that despitefully use me.

I am expected to turn the other cheek.

I am expected to not return evil for evil.

I am expected to make the difference.

I am expected to bear my brother’s burden.

I am expected to go the second mile.

I am expected to restore my fallen brother.

I am expected to love everyone.

I am expected to forgive.

I am expected to honor my father and mother.

I am expected to make the difference.

I am expected to be a witness.

I am expected to travail for the lost.

I am expected to go forth weeping bearing precious seed.

I am expected to come back rejoicing bringing sheaves with me.

I am expected to go into all of the world, teaching the Gospel to every creature.

I am expected to make the difference.

I am expected to be holy like Him.

I am expected to live soberly and righteous in this present world.

I am expected to love Him with all my heart.

I am expected to love Him with all my soul.

I am expected to love Him with all my might.

I am expected to love Him with all my strength.

I am expected to make the difference.

I am expected to put Him first in my life.

I am expected to love Him more than anyone in the world.

I am expected to follow Him.

I am expected to make myself available.

I am expected to make myself ready.

I am expected to make the difference.

I am expected to take the lowest seat.

I am expected to humble myself.

I am expected to trust Him.

I am expected to be faithful.

I am expected to keep His commandments.

I am expected to pray for my leaders.

I am expected to be a peacemaker.

I am expected to make the difference.

The love of many has waxed cold. I am expected to make the difference.

Some have fallen away. I am expected to make the difference.

This sinful world needs Jesus. I am expected to make the difference.

By His help, I shall not fail!

The Peacemaker

The Peacemaker

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

What happens when there is an absence of peace in the church?

James 3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

  • A “peacemaker” is one who seeks to bring harmony and reconciliation between those who are in conflict.
  • I’m not talking about being a pushover, a door mat, or a punching bag.
  • I’m talking about being the strongest one around when everyone else gives in to his or her weaknesses.

In war, those that go in with guns are called “peacekeepers.”

Those who own a gun, know how important it is to safely handle one with ProtectandLock, as well as how dangerous and lethal one is.

  • In the in the body of Christ, we are not asked to be peacekeepers, but rather peacemakers.
  • It says – “Blessed are the peace MAKERS.”
  • Sometimes we misread this line and think it says,  “Blessed are the peace lovers”!

We have been given the “Ministry Of Reconciliation”

2 Corinthians 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

What We Need Are PeaceMakers!

  • Every Home Needs Peacemakers
  • Every Church Needs Peacemakers

1. Where There Is Jealousy, There Is No Peace!

  • Jealousy is cruel as the grave
  • Envy, Covetousness, Competition, Emulation
  • “Where there is envy and strife, there is confusion and every evil work.”

Three times David had to learn how to dodge the javelins of jealousy thrown by King Saul.

What We Need Are PeaceMakers!

  • Every Home Needs Peacemakers
  • Every Church Needs Peacemakers

2. Where There Is Gossip, There Is No Peace!

  • Backbiters, Accusers, and busybodies.

Proverbs 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

Proverbs 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

Proverbs 6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

Proverbs 6:19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

What We Need Are PeaceMakers!

  • Every Home Needs Peacemakers
  • Every Church Needs Peacemakers

3. Where There Are Railers, There Is No Peace!

1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

The spirit of criticism will get off on you if you hang around critical people. That’s why the Bible instructs us not to fellowship with those that make critical and snide remarks.

What We Need Are PeaceMakers!

  • Every Home Needs Peacemakers
  • Every Church Needs Peacemakers

4. Where There Is Bitterness, There Is No Peace!

  • Being offended is a choice.
  • Don’t hold grudges.
  • Many will be defiled by that spirit.

What We Need Are PeaceMakers!

  • Every Home Needs Peacemakers
  • Every Church Needs Peacemakers

5. Where There Is Unfaithfulness In A Marriage, There Is No Peace!

  • Learn how to possess your vessel in Sanctification & Honor
  • If you are looking for validation, God validates the peacemakers by calling them his children.

What We Need Are PeaceMakers!

  • Every Home Needs Peacemakers
  • Every Church Needs Peacemakers

6. Where There Is Rebellion, There Is No Peace!

Submission to God and His Word is everyone’s business.

  • It brings peace.
  • Some Teens rebel against rules, standards.
  • Some Adults do too.

What We Need Are PeaceMakers!

  • Every Home Needs Peacemakers
  • Every Church Needs Peacemakers

7. Where There Is Unforgiveness, There Is No Peace!

Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

How long will you let a war go on?

Mark 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

This World Needs More Peacemakers!

Your Church Needs More Peacemakers!

Your Home Needs More Peacemakers!

How Do You Say Good-Bye?

with 17 comments

How Do You Say Good-Bye?

Good-byes are not always easy to say. As a small boy, my grandson Huntley Ballestero struggled with saying good-bye to those he loved. Especially when my wife and I were leaving after visiting his home, he would hide when the good-byes were being said and the hugs got passed around. He didn’t like saying good-bye.

I tearfully remember my Alzheimer’s afflicted Daddy standing on the porch of his house in Fontana, California. Even with Mom’s prompting, he struggled to wave good-bye to me as I sat in my rental car ready to head back to the airport.

In a weak sounding voice he haltingly said, “I’ll see… you… in the… rapture.” With tears drenching my face, I vowed to him that I would see him in the rapture!

No final good-bye is easy! Words don’t seem to be able to say it all.

Sometimes, death comes to our loved ones so quick there is not time to say good-bye.

Other times, the good-byes become stretched out for several days or even a couple of weeks.

And then there are the good-byes that unfold in slow motion. They go on unendingly. We stand by and watch as their body slowly succumbs to the ravages of disease. We are helpless to fix it for them and we grieve that we can’t make them better.

Our hearts ache when we see the one we love, admire, trust and enjoy, fight so hard to live. It’s as if their body can’t keep pace with their will.

Such Has Been The Good-Bye To Our Beloved Michigan District Superintendent, Bro. Joseph Carpenter.

The first time I heard the name, Joseph Carpenter, was in 1964. My wife-to-be informed me she was going to be a Bridesmaid in her cousin Victoria Jordan and Joe Carpenter’s wedding.

When my wife and I married in 1965, some 5 months after their wedding, she asked Victoria Jordan Carpenter to be in our wedding.

The first revival my wife and I preached after getting married was for Bro. Victor Jordan in Jackson, Michigan. Bro. Joseph Carpenter assisted his father-in-law, Bro. Jordan and was a tremendous blessing to him and the church there.

Bro. Carpenter loved the work of God, he loved everything about church and he loved the Michigan Camp. All of us from Michigan have seen him work around the camp. He wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and get dirty. He led by doing.

Today my wife and I shed tears remembering our ‘cousin’, our friend, a great pastor, a tremendous preacher, and our beloved District Superintendent… Joseph D. Carpenter.

For the last many months we have all viewed his will to live and his struggle with disease in person and on Facebook.

He has been exceedingly brave. His wife and children have also been heroic in their support and comfort giving. The rest of us have tearfully watched and waited, praying, reading updates, and hoping against hope. And then as we held our collective breaths, we watched the man we love leave us. We were forced to say good-bye!

Reading the sentiments of family and friends as their aching hearts have spilled out onto the printed page has comforted us.

Facebook Posts From His Immediate Family

How Do You Say Good-Bye?

It’s never easy. As we all can see by these comments, it’s not easy for us to see our loved ones go from us. Even though we know their suffering is over and they are in the presence of the Lord. Still, our hearts ache, our eyes fill with tears, and our arms will never be full again.

But, we have this one consolation… our “Good-bye” was not final!

Tell Him You’re Stupid!

Tell Him You’re Stupid!

The National City Church, Rev. Leamon Reynolds, Pastor. circa 1959

Betty parked her Austin Healey convertible in the parking lot and walked into the modest sized Pentecostal church in National City, California. She was doing quite well for a single girl in the business world in the late 1950’s.

Betty Picklesimer looked professional in her classy dark suit. She was, after all, an Officer at the local Bank. She knew very little about Pentecost, only what her brother had told her. She had seen wonderful changes in him and wanted to visit his church.

She sat near the back on the right side as she entered the revival service. The church was full. Her brother, Alan Picklesimer was already a member there. He was 21 and the Sunday School teacher for teenage boys. I was 14 and in his class.

My father, Carl Ballestero was the nightly evangelist. Betty came down to the altar when he finished preaching and the invitation was given.

She repented and cried for a long time. When she finished praying, she asked to be baptized. The church rejoiced and shouted when she received the Holy Ghost and began speaking in tongues while still in the water.

The next night, Betty was back in service again. She was praising God and rejoicing in her newfound relationship with the Lord.

During the altar service that night, Betty began praying with new seekers in the altar. My father became curious about what this new convert was saying to them.

Betty began praying with a woman from Tijuana, Mexico. Here she was, a well-dressed professional businesswoman, praying with a very poor and uneducated woman. Dad moved closer so as to overhear her words. Betty shouted words of encouragement into the little lady’s ears.

“Tell Him you’re stupid! Tell Him you’re ignorant! Tell Him you don’t know nothing!” Betty was yelling in the new seeker’s ear. “That’s what I told Him and He gave me the Holy Ghost!”

The Mexican lady received the Holy Ghost!

Seeker? Are you ready to tell God that you’re stupid? That you’re ignorant? That you don’t know anything? Maybe you should.

The Holy Ghost comes easily to hungry hearts that are willing to humble themselves.

The Broken Finger Syndrome

with 2 comments

The Broken Finger Syndrome

A young brunette goes into the doctor’s office and says to the doctor that her body hurts wherever she touches it.

“That’s impossible,” the doctor says. “Show me.”

She takes her finger and pushes her on elbow and screams in pain. She pushes her knee and screams; she pushes her ankle and screams again. She touches her ear lobe and yells in pain.

The doctor sat there a minute observing his patients behavior and says, “Are you a natural blonde?”

“Why yes, she says, “I just recently died my hair brown.”

“I thought so,” the doctor says. “You have a broken finger.”

My good friend, Brother Kenneth Bow shared that joke with me. We both had a good laugh. He shared the fact with me too, that there are a lot of people with broken fingers. With apologies to him, let me explore this line of thinking a bit more.

Most Politicians Have “The Broken Finger Syndrome”

It seems that every administration blames the previous administration for all of its woes.

  • High taxes
  • The poor economy
  • Unemployment

The “Broken Finger Syndrome” Is Found In Every Community And Also In Every Church.

Those with this affliction find pain everywhere. Everything they touch seems to hurt them. They find pain in all of their relationships. They are easily recognized by their constant exclamations of pain.

We all have met those that stay upset about things in their local church. They constantly yell in pain about the leadership in the church.

The Pastor Hurts Me!

  • He’s always preaching right at me.
  • He doesn’t like me.
  • He offended me.
  • He corrected my child.
  • He hurt me.
  • I’m not being fed
  • I’m not being used here.
  • I’m leaving.

As Sunday School children in the 1950’s ,we sang a little song that went like this:

It’s Me Oh Lord Standing In The Need Of Prayer

Author Unknown

1. Not my father, not my mother, but it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

Not my sister, not my brother, but it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

2. Not the people that are shouting, but it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

Not the members I’ve been doubting, but it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

3. Not the preacher, not the sinner, but it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

Not the deacon, not the teacher, but it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

Chorus:

It’s me, it’s me, it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

It’s me, it’s me, it’s me, O Lord,

Standing in the need of prayer.

1 Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

If In Your Christian Journey, You Did Not Acquire The Love Of God; You Did It All Wrong.

If In Your Life Of Holiness And Righteousness, You Did Not Acquire The Love of God; You Did It All Wrong.

Then on “The Judgment Day” It Won’t Be Funny! Because You Did It All Wrong!

Some Did, Some Didn’t

Some Did, Some Didn’t

Fall is a beautiful time in Indiana. The farmers have little roadside vegetable stands set up that stay busy with city slicker customers looking for fresh produce.

By this time of year, most crops have already been harvested.  Well, except for maybe soybeans, pumpkins and the field corn.

The average crop of field corn is beautiful when it is harvested. Trucks can be seen hauling the yellow corn to the ethanol plants and to the local Co-op.

For the most part, all the ears of corn look very much alike. But what catches the eye, are the ears of corn that don’t look like the others.  Some cobs are full with golden kernels; others are not. There are ears of corn of varied lengths and descriptions. In every truck load.

What these ears of field corn have in common, is that:

  • They all were planted by the same farmer.
  • They all were purchased at the same feed store.
  • They all were planted in the same field.
  • They all received the same amount of fertilizer.
  • They all received the same amount of sunshine.
  • They all received the same amount of rain.
  • They all received the same amount of wind.
  • They all received the same amount of weeding.
  • They all received the same amount of irrigation.
  • They were all planted the same day.
  • They were all harvested the same day.
  • They didn’t all turn out the same.
  • Why?

Was it difference the farmer’s fault? Was the problem with the seed, or was it the soil? I’ll never know. The harvest shows the disparity of each ear.

There is another harvest that comes to mind. That one is a Harvest of Souls.

Apostolic churches are beautiful in spirit and worship. They are lovely in holiness and truth. Their love and fervor for the name of Jesus is without equal.

Yet, not every church member looks and acts the same. Here and there exceptions are found in every congregation.

  • Some don’t pray like the rest.
  • Some don’t worship like the rest
  • Some don’t pay tithe like the rest.
  • Some won’t dress like the rest.
  • Some won’t live like the rest.
  • Some won’t be faithful like the rest.
  • Some won’t witness like the rest.
  • Some don’t love holiness like the rest.
  • Some won’t obey God’s Word like the rest.
  • Why?

What made them different from all the others? How come others connected with God, the church and the pastor and they didn’t? I can’t answer that, and you may not be able to either.

  • They all went to the same church.
  • They all sang the same songs.
  • They all prayed at the same time.
  • They all had the same pastor.
  • They all heard the same sermon.
  • They all received the same encouragement.
  • They all received the same correction.
  • They all were given the same love.
  • They all were given the same hope.
  • They all attended the same revivals
  • They all came forward to pray at the end of the service.

Yet some got on fire, and others did not. Some submitted to God, and others did not. Some got a good experience of the Holy Ghost, and others… who knows?

Some lived a life of carefulness. Others did not. Some looked godly. Others did not. Some dressed modestly. Others did not. Some knew God. Others… who knows?

Some women had uncut hair. Others did not. Some men were clean-shaven. Others were not. Some always said ‘Amen”. Others did not. Some had a fiery testimony. Others did not.

Some day, some will hear Him say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” Others may not.

+ = − , − = +

+ = − , −  = +

Plus Equals Minus, Minus Equals Plus!

What kind of math is that? If Albert Einstein were to read that statement, I’m sure his brow would wrinkle in puzzlement. But, it’s true!

It’s not new math. It’s old math, it’s really old math. It was the Lord that first introduced it to man.

This Old Testament verse explains both concepts:

Proverbs 11:2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

This New Testament passage also explains how it works.

Luke 14:8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

Luke 14:9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

Luke 14:10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

1. + = −  (Plus Equals Minus)

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 13:10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Proverbs 29:23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

2. − = + (Minus Equals Plus)

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

It’s God’s Math. His Math principles never change.

Man’s Pride seems to be his biggest Minus.

Man’s Humility turns out to be his biggest Plus!

The Case Of the Chubby Calf

The Case Of the Chubby Calf

The farmer looked at the big newborn calf in the stall by its mother. It looked so cute and perfect. The word butterball didn’t come to mind, but it was filled out pretty good already.

It wasn’t the only calf on his small farm. But of this latest and bunch of calves, this one was the biggest. This little calf didn’t have to compete for attention. Neither did it lack for food.

The farmer had plenty of grain and good pasture to feed all his animals. He wasn’t rich, but he lived comfortable enough. Actually, he had some help around the place to make it run smooth. All he had to do was just supervise while the others did all of the work.

But now, that baby calf was something! Anyone could see that! The farmer always checked his stock before retiring at night and also, he looked in on them the first thing in the morning. He noticed it was growing like a weed and putting on the weight.

He took time to check on the calf’s progress each morning and give him an occasional pat. He liked what he saw. The little guy was eating well. His appetite was good and there was plenty of feed. After all, he was the only calf, but he was going to be a big calf.

In a just matter of months the calf really started filling out good. He grew quite big for his age. He got so fat, the farmer often smiled at the chubby little guy’s antics in the field.

As calves, go he didn’t have a care in the world. He ate and frolicked and then ate some more. He was chubbier than any of the other calves.

The farmer knew that a calf that chubby would bring a good price at the market. Buyers would snatch him up fast. The round little calf was the farm’s pride and joy. Neighbors that passed by often commented on the little guy’s weight and size.

The farmer was waiting for just the right time to take him to market. The hired hands around the place all knew that any day now, the farmer was going to ask them to take the chubby little calf to the Sale Barn. It was just a matter of time and they waited for the call.

Then the call came. One morning the farmer animatedly called several of his men to come to him. They quickly responded. Knowing what he wanted before he asked.

“I want you to go get that big chubby calf, and kill it,” he said.

“Kill it?”

“Kill it!”

They field hands looked glanced quickly at each other. This was totally unexpected. A prize calf like that would bring good money. Their boss was a good businessman, and they didn’t need the fresh meat. Why kill it?

Then the farmer explained, with the biggest grin on his face they had ever seen!

Luke 15:23 … bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

Luke 15:24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

So likewise, the Heavenly Father always freely gives His best for you, His children.

He never withholds His choicest bounty from you.

You mean more to Him than anything else He has.
