How To Quit Sinning For Dummies

  • Can I actually stop sinning?  YES!
  • Don’t I need the Holy Ghost to stop sinning? NO!

Up until the 1980’s, America had spent an astronomical amount of taxpayer’s money trying to discover ways to stop Drug usage in children, all to no avail. They later came up with a plan that was unbelievably simple. The name of the new program was simple too. The Government’s advice was “JUST SAY NO”.

Eventually, this approach was also expanded to deal with violence, premarital sex, and any other vices that young people might try.

The slogan was created and championed by First Lady Nancy Reagan during her husband’s presidency according to Wikipedia.

Imagine the solution was to just say, NO!

There are many examples of the Word of God in the Old Testament telling us not to sin. Even Jesus told people not to sin BEFORE the Holy Ghost was given.

SINNING IS A CHOICE

  • No one makes you.
  • You do it because you want to.
  • The Bible says you can quit.

QUITTING IS EASY

  • Even a Dummy can quit.
  • No experience required.
  • No 12-step program required.

WHAT DO I DO?

  1. The First thing you must do is Repent. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive you!
  2. Then quit sinning.
  3. Isn’t that overly simplistic? NO! It’s exactly what the Bible says to do.

OLD TESTAMENT EXAMPLES

1. JUST THROW IT OUT

  • Gen. 35:2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
  • Josh. 24:23 Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.

2. TURN YOUR BACK ON IT

  • 2 Chron 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

3. CEASE AND DESIST

  • Psa. 37:8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
  • Is. 1:16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

NEW TESTAMENT EXAMPLES

4. JUST STOP IT

  • John 5:14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
  • John 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
  • 1Cor. 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

5. DROP IT LIKE A HOT POTATO

  • Heb. 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

6. RUN FROM IT

  • 1Cor. 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that commiteth fornication sinneth against his own body.
  • 2Tim. 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

7. JUST DON’T DO IT

  • James 1:16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.

TO STOP SINNING IS NOT ENOUGH

  • You must be Born Again
  • You can’t go to Heaven unless you are.

How Do I Become Born Again? A large crowd of people asked the Apostle Peter that on the Day of Pentecost. His advice was to the point.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

It’s Simple:

  1. Repent. Tell Jesus you are sorry. That’s your job.
  2. Get Baptized in Jesus Name. That’s the Preacher’s job.
  3. Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. That’s God’s job to give it to you. (You will speak in tongues when you receive it.)

NOW, GO DO THE RIGHT THING!
