They’re Everywhere!!

They never used to be seen in Pentecostal Churches, but they are now. If they were ever seen in church in the old days, an embarrassed apology was made. But not any more!

Now, they come to many church and do not mind being obvious about showing up. They seem to enjoy the attention they attract, too.

Some of the time they come to church and no one notices them when they walk in, after they finally sit down. Then it’s like, they say Boo! and get your attention. They sure know how to catch folks off guard.

How times have changed!

I remember them never being seen in church anywhere years ago. But now, they’ve evidently got religion and so they come to almost every service.

In the old days, someone would try to help them hide from if they came, and make sure they stayed out of sight, but no effort is being made anymore. They seem to enjoy being seen in church. More and more of the folks are becoming comfortable around them.

Now, they come to our General Conferences, Camp Meetings, Rallies and especially Sunday Morning Services. They love to be seen and enjoy the attention and the limelight found even on the platform.

Actually, the few that are unhappy to see them in church any more… now just turn their heads and try to ignore them. Like an ostrich with it’s head in the sand.

It used to be a problem when they showed up anywhere, especially church. But now, they’ve even come to church with some preacher’s wives and daughters. Go figure.

What am I talking about?

I’m talking about Knees.

    • How are we going to show the world Jesus if we lose our stance on modesty? I can honestly see this lead in other directions as well. We need to take a stance on modesty and preach it from the word of God without fear or favor. The world may think it’s acceptable, but the word of God says otherwise. To expose your thigh is a shame!

      • “How are we going to show the world Jesus if we lose our stance on modesty?” Ummm… there a a million ways to show Jesus to the world. I highly recommend loving others as the way to show the world Jesus. Modesty isn’t about others – it is about God!

      • Yes, modesty is about God, but it is also about making sure we do not cast a stumbling block before others in the church. Men have a very difficult time because of the fact that they are programmed to be more visually oriented. Thus why so many men struggle with the addiction to pornography. How is it Godly to entice a man who is struggling to maintain a holy walk by wearing immodest clothes?

I tell you, it is not Godly in the slightest.

We must teach our young ladies just what ripple affects their wardrobe choices make when they walk out the door. If a man looks at a young lady and because of the show of skin feels a lewd spirit overtake his mind, I assure you, she is not representing Christ. I would rather show the love and devotion I have for God by worshipping Him in the beauty of Holiness.

The Bible also says that we must be obedient to the Word of God, and I can tell you that in Isaiah chapter 47, it speaks about a woman who has been humbled to little more than a slave or a prostitute, and one of the ways that they showed that status was by baring their legs and allowing people to see their thighs.

Modesty and the application thereof is intricately connected to salvation, and a deeper walk with God.

  3. This needed to be said. If only it would be seen by all of our pastors. But even at that, too many lack the ‘guts’ to address the problem. And at a time when we need modesty the most! What we (as ladies) do in moderation our daughters will do in excess~

  5. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!!! This needs to be said!!
Last fall I took my 17 yr old daughter to a conference. I already warned my kids that there would probably be a lot of these showing up, but since we only went to this Pentecostal conference to hear a particular uncompromising man of God, that to avoid distractions they should just focus on Jesus & the Word. Well, these formerly modest attendees did indeed make quite the appearance. Nevertheless, God spoke mightily through His prophet & my kids were blessed. Afterward, as we were leaving, my daughter was repeatedly stopped and complimented on her modest skirt. It stood out. Then one lady from the church, who looked to be around 50, asked her if she had added the ruffle to the bottom of the skirt. My daughter replied that yes she did add the material. “Well, you really didn’t need to” she said. Innocently, my daughter explained that since the skirt was originally a mini-skirt above the knees that she did have to modify it to make it modest. The lady then answered and said that because a skirt is above the knees doesn’t make it a mini…and tried to convince my teen that really the skirt would have looked great w/o the addition. She proceeded to express that a skirt above the knees is modest & acceptable as long as it’s not ‘too high’ like closer to the thigh! I stepped in and set that straight in a very loving way, but honestly, when I got to the car my soul was so grieved! These things ought not so to be!
Once again, thanks for speaking up, speaking out, but above all- speaking truth! God bless you.

    • I agree, S.E. I have also watched the slackness in modesty in the church over the past 28 yrs I’ve been in the Apostolic Truth ~ 😦 So sad! When I came into the church, I made the decision to convert my worldly ways in to a standard that God would approve. And yes, I watched by example. My question now is ~ why are the grounded women (and men) who have been in this Faith their whole life, now taking upon themselves the look of the world? Shorter skirts, glitz-n-glitter, stiletto high-heels, anything else that resembles “the world’s fashion”. Where is the meek and humble appearance, in moderation, gone to? Most of the ladies resemble fashion models, competing against each other ~ WHY?? 😦 Why is anything remotely “sexual” being allowed in any of our church, conferences, or anywhere we assemble?! It saddens my heart and soul to see our young ladies, and even some of our little girls, dressing like Prom Dates ~ 😦

The men are wearing short sleeved shirts and polo shirts, and some even dare to wear today’s “fashionable longer shorts”?? They are not modest for the men, either! (covering eyes) You can’t even tell some of our Apostolic men-folk from good Baptist saints these days, as my husband says! At a time, in these days especially, when we all must hang on to our holiness stance for the Lord, in keeping with the Word of God, why is it that now the church is slipping on a backward slope? Now it doesn’t matter? “Be not as the world.” Pretty plain to me.
I admire your dght for taking a stand on how she was dressed, even tho it was very inappropriate for the woman to over-step your teachings as her mother. I think I would have had no tongue left in my mouth, for having gnawed it off ~ LoL

      • They preach against Jewelry but go to conferences low and behold what do you see but more Jewelry for women’s hair and lapels than you do at the jewelry store and in the house of worship, what did Jesus do with those that bought and sold in the temple?

    • I would’ve been grieved, too. It grieves me when young ladies try to be modest and get “slammed” by a”church goer”. I appreciate all women that take a stance on modesty. It shows their heart is in the right place and not on “man’s opinion”. Tell your daughter, Jesus is pleased and that’s what matters.

  8. Know if only someone would say this behind the pulpit ….pastors! Here in Jerusalem if you go to the western wall you have to be modestly clothed .sad to to say 80% of or ladies would not be able to visit this site with out having to buy a new wardrobe. I still love you but we need to get some modesty back in our Lifes,

  9. I’m so glad to hear SOMEBODY saying something about this! I wonder where these preachers’ vision has gone. It’s like they don’t even see it! Thank you for lifting up the standard!

  17. Having been raised in this precious Truth from birth, I have watched this trend slip into the church slowly but surely. I am only 33, but I am old enough to have watched not only the youth, but LEADERS in the church completely give up on this very important aspect of modesty. It’s sad. It’s ridiculous. It’s sickening. Where have all the modest ladies gone??!! Women who used to teach ME about holiness, women from whom I adapted my own definition of holiness, are now way on the other side of the fence. (and I don’t just mean knobby knees showing) What happened?! Come on, ladies! You know better than this! Pastors who allow this on the platform… hello? Parents who allow the girls to walk out of their house dressed in this fashion… hello? Youth leaders, Sunday School teachers, Ladies Ministry, Music leaders… has everyone gone blind? Do the teachings you taught yesterday no longer apply today? I thought a standard WAS a standard for the simple reason that it CAN NOT be changed. Today it is the hemline, tomorrow… who knows. God help us. Thank you so much, Bro. Ballestero, for sharing your heart. Maybe one of these church leaders will read this and wake up.

    • Well Said!

      Kathryn

      April 10, 2013 at 4:33 pm

    • I agree. I still use the modesty standards but the part I find hard to follow is we had to have sleeves to our elbows and I really have trouble finding those. But I think one of the best compliments I get is when someone says you must be pentecostal because of the way you look. I know that the dress doesn’t make you pentecostal but that is the first thing people see. You also have to act the way you are supposed too. The Bible is quite clear that we are to come out from among them and be ye separate and that we do not become like the world but the world like us. People come into the church because they want something different than the world has to offer and that is part of it. They might not get it at first but when every one else is dressing a certain way then they will start being convicted. We have to love people as they are and I do and what other people do is not my judgement call, but it saddens me when someone comes to church and says that they thought we dressed differently and that I do. I then have to explain that it is each personal conviction and I can’t judge them. That saddens me because I used to never have that problem come up. All I can do is hold to what I was taught and hope that it inspires others as the older examples of ladies were and are to me.

      April 18, 2013 at 10:18 am

      • My dad evangelized for awhile when I was little. We visited many churches, especially in the South, that preached against sleeves above the elbows. Even though my dad did not have a problem with the above-elbow length, we always respected the teachings of the pastor anytime we were at their church ministering. I never really understood why pastors were so “strict” when it came to that particular teaching, but looking back as an adult living in the day and age we live in, I see it clearly. There has to be a line drawn somewhere. Those pastors were more than likely not proclaiming sleeve length as a Heaven or Hell issue, but were trying to set some boundaries. It really saddens (even angers) me to see people push the limits of the pastor’s teachings today. I fully agree on what you said about people coming to the church expecting something different and having a hard time differentiating from the world once they get there. Personal convictions are one thing, but outright defiance of the pastor’s teachings on holiness is quite another. That’s when it becomes a sin, in my opinion. Not necessarily in the length of the hem, but in the attitude of the heart when it comes to spiritual authority. Thank you for continuing to uphold what you’ve been taught as well as being a Godly example!

    April 10, 2013 at 3:20 pm

    • Exactly, many people claim that God doesn’t care about the outside, (he just cares about your heart); however, this is entirely incorrect. There are literally hundreds of verses in the bible pertaining to what God feels about our appearances. He made us in HIS own image, imagine that; he cares about how we portray HIS image.
As you mentioned, not only does the inside manifest itself through the outside, (much like inner joy is manifested outwardly, as well as sickness can be seen from the outside) the inner convictions and devotion to God that you have within will surely manifest itself outwardly.
Your love for God and your brothers in Christ will compel you to represent God in a worthy way, as well as show love for your brothers by not flaunting yourself.
God tells us to adorn ourselves with modesty 🙂 modesty, as many have pointed out, STANDS out in a crowd. I will say this for HIS honor and Glory that I can not count the number of times that complete strangers have complimented me or gone out of thier way for my benefit.
Why? Because through my dress and mannerisms they can see that I am different, that I am not like other girls; even non believers will notice it, they won’t know what it is, but they will see something and they will respect it. Because when you honor your God 🙂 he will shine honor on you.
When people see you, they should see God, when they hear you, they should hear God, when you walk into a room, they should feel his presence in your life. People will gravitate towards you, not because of your beauty and charm, but because of the inner joy that God gives to these he lives in.

  23. Great post and well said, its time more of our pastor’s and preacher’s “lift up the standard” . Jer. 6:16- Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths , where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. BUT THEY SAID, We will not walk therein. God help our generation to not be “but they said”.

  24. Love it!!!! At first I thought it was gonna be about bare arms cause that’s changed too. So many are going with very little sleeves or none at all. And the skirts that are barely to the knees still have slits all the way up… What a shame that the church has conformed to the world and not transformed into the image of God.

  33. So sad, but oh so true! At the rate this is going if we don’t put a stop to it, there will be micro mini skirts in the church before too long showing even more leg. • AMEN, AMEN, AMEN!!! As a mother of five daughters (teens and early 20’s), it has become exceedingly difficult to teach mot only modesty, but also that which is becoming of a godly lady. We uphold modesty and standards within our home. When we go to campmeetings and conferences where we are seeing knees, low-cut tops (*or high but see-through), outfits worn WAY too tight on ladies AND MEN (those skinny pants have to go!), n9t to mention the COSTLY ARRAY around necks and wrists, in hair, as well as in the form of purses and shoes. If it draws un-do attention, it can become a stumbling block or hinder worship. Which god are they worshiping by wearing those? The god of vanity? Pride? If more time is spent picking out an outfit than in prayer and praise, there is a major problem! Oh, to God that I can somehow influence my daughters to walk in a way befitting to being Daughters of the King!

  40. I see so much happening in our churches today, it scares me to think that our children and grandchildren may have a slim chance of even seeing the precious modes ty of our forefathers. They cut their hair, they dye their hair, they wear pants to quick trips to walmart of work, they wear halter tops and false fingernails and french manicures, which the Bible, The Spoken Word of God says he HATES EVERY FALSE WAY! If He hates it do we seriously think for one second that your going to get in when God hates what your doing or look like. The Word of God has boundries, and no back bone Pastors if your turning a blind eye and say other churches are doing it, are you kidding me? Your put as a Watchmen on the Wall. Great Responsabilty lies upon you not only for what you do, but also for what you don’t and aren’t doing. and we wonder why our churches aren’t growing, we don’t want to offend or make someone mad, EXCUSE ME. What about offending God and Cost someone their soul because you didn’t tell them straight up what God expects, and don’t use them til they are where they should be spiritually, working for god on the platform is a privelage. If you think God doesn’t take it seriously find out what he expected the high priest to wear and look and do and his job in the holy of holies. He even told them what color and their job and if it wasn’t carried out he didn’t come out alive. I just want to leave with this food for thought, I received a revelation one day from the Lord about a scripture that says, “If the Righteous Scarcely be SAVED. Where shall the UNGODLY AND Sinner appear. 1Peter 4:18” Read it, notice the Ungodly is a part of the lost here in this scripture. Better get this all you that are ok with a real problem. Ever where everyone is or why your church isn’t growing. There is no Power and Miracles like it should or could be. Ok, I’ll shut up but when I came into this it got a hold of me in Va at a church before I even made it in the door, the music sent chills through me. I went back 30 yrs later at that church where I found God and they have quit every standard, they had hair cut like a boy, pants and shorts on in the choir and makeup and all that you know false ways God hates. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I walked in there looking modes and long glory uncut and seperated for my God, and I just wept. Well If I offended anyone, read the book because God has my back not you.

  41. Where I am originally from in Eastern Canada we were required to have shirt sleeves to our elbows (covered elbows) and skirts past the knees. Fit (tightness) was also scrutinized by the Pastor and Youth Pastor. I went on a missions trip to Africa with 30 other young people and I was unfortunately the most modest girl. The American girls had short cap sleeves and knees out almost every day. This was about 5 years ago. I have now married and moved to a larger city and the Pastor is UPC but never ever preaches holiness. His own daughter shows cleavage and knees every service that she attends. Wears pants in public other times. I almost feel pressured to wear skirts to show my knees by her and another older woman. As a young woman about to start a family this is very stressful for me. How much worse is it going to get? I just wish all the Pastors taught holiness and required it of the people on the platform and their own families. I think a course should be taught at least annually for all who wish to attend and this be required to continue to be a Pastor in the UPC. It just distresses me when new people come into the church and see these things and it’s considered “normal”.

    • Sister, just pray that God will reveal Holliness to your Pastor and the Church. You keep setting an example by dressing Holy…keep covering up, God will honor it. If there isn’t a change in the standards from the pullpit, pray that God send you to a church that does take a stand on Holliness. Amen. Gilmer Apostolic Church in Gilmer, Tx.would love to have you. 42. This is a sad truth, but a very timely reminder for each one of us…. I hardly understand how is that we couldn’t establish a real manifestation of our Apostolic doctrine specifically holy living… I have learned that there are churches which now supports movie watching in cinemas, that it is now ok to cut hair as long as it is still practically long when it is being measured… And it is now allowable to wear make-ups, etc… This is really heart-breaking and really alarming…

Everyone of us is found guilty since we are not really united to live by God’s standards..May we remember that we are not just a family nor a team… We are more than these.. We are the body of Christ… But I am personally hopeful though, that we can be a Nehemiah of our days….

Early church members must continue to advocate in words and in deeds the Apostolic Holy Living… We really have to exert so much effort to pass on to new generation what is in the Bible.

And I am blessed and glad that I have experienced and witnessed as well the real practice/living the Apostolic way… I can easily look back and help myself to be reminded when I myself seem to forget… But how about this new generation, if they will never experienced the real Apostolic Holy Living just because they never see any good examples from us being their elders?

Let us join hand in hand as we pray the need to bring back to the world the Apostolic Truth and not the World’s deceptions inside the church.

I really love this! This will make a big change! Thanks a lot for this is really an eye opener.

Let the Apostolic Church rise!!!… God never changes and so His standards…
So help us God, for we cannot make it without you leading us!!!

    God bless us all!

    • I must agree with a whole heart. not only are the skirts getting shorter and tighter, men are wearing clothes that are a bit too revealing as well, what is up with the hair pieces, and pendants almost as big as the head of those that are wearing them, leggings (they look like pants to me). Getting back to the hair pieces these poor —— put this garbage on babies heads making them look like 2 headed monsters, do they not know they are putting something into their children they will have to battle all their lives? We may be keeping our distance from the world but the world is moving farther from holiness so now we are where they (the world) used to be. We maybe separate but we are now where the world used to be.

  44. I enjoyed this. I agree with you 2000%. Holiness really is beautiful. I grew up in a church where the pastor taught holiness standards in such a way that you desired to live holy. Such an awesome MAN OF GOD. My mother and aunt told me that the pastors wife would also teach them about holy dressing at prayer meetings on Tuesday mornings. I have wondered why the pastors wives that I’ve been under have never bothered to do this. Where is the burden for this any more. But I thank God for pastors that do teach holiness, and may they multiply.

    • What a great post! It is grieving to see how far the church has fallen victim to “fashion”. Women and men alike strive to fit in and be fashionable, thus comprising holiness. I worry about my children. It is scary how feminine boys are starting to dress. My son will Not wear skinny jeans or skinny suit pants as long as I have a say so. When did it become acceptable for our men and women to have such form fitting clothing? Why are we as Pentecostals starting to blend in so much with the world? Lord help us to hang on to the truth and to continue to be set apart. Don’t let us forget!

  47. Wholehearedly agree! Knees are incredibly alluring. Pentecostal girls must be taught to be identified as Christians according to their dress. Why, I won’t even wear pajamas pants to bed! Nightgowns only. It’s such a shame to see young girls wearing them underneath their skirts. Pants are PANTS regardless of the time of day they are worn. Suit jackets and demin were also first masculine wear, so I refrain from any clothing that isn’t feminine. (No jean skirts!) I see girls wearing bowties and fitted vests like men and it is NOT ladylike. It still baffles me that some choose to perm their hair, when God didn’t create them with curly hair in the first place! In fact, holy hair must be protected so that it remains healthy! No heat styling or extraneous products for this woman’s glory! Big thanks to alll who go out of their way to point out the failings of this generation’s youth! Knee-knocking is a slippery-slope, pretty soon they’ll justify bikinis! Obviously!

  48. STAND, STAND, STAND! He never changes and He never will. His expectations for His bride have been set and they are not changing, either. Take hope; not all are succumbing to this. (i just addressed it last week!) There are those who will stand for holiness and separation from the world and the things of the world, including the “hey, let’s glorify the flesh as much as we can” attitude, nay, SPIRIT, that is trying to infest the church like a pestilence. Let’s continue to raise the banner of holiness and righteousness high…. and NOT the hem line!!

  51. I would like to encourage every holiness-preaching minister to continue to hold fast to the line. To anyone tempted to back up on holiness and modesty, please consider these thoughts:

In the world, women are taught that unless they are sexy, they are worthless. To many of us, the true church is a God-given refuge from this mind-set. Please do NOT allow the church to become like the world we are so desperately trying to escape from!! What’s the use of going to a “pentecostal” church if it is no different from the world?? When I was in the world, I wanted so-o-o much to look like the Pentecostal girls I knew!! I thank God He gave me His HOLY Spirit to do so!

Some of us have paid a very high price to come out of the world and hold to the standards of modesty and godly-mindedness we love so dearly. I want to be in a church where the men (and women!) do not have eyes full of adultery and the lust of the eyes.

There are other girls and women out there who want to be modest and godly-appearing bu they don’t have the strength to break free of peer pressure, etc. Church – — give them a refuge and the power to break free!! Let them know they can worship the Lord in the BEAUTY of HOLINESS and they don’t have to be sexy in order to have value in God’s kingdom.

Obviously, the REAL church won’t abandon holiness – genuine holiness is a result of the presence of God’s Holy Spirit.

God commanded the children of Israel a soon as He brought them out of Egypt to be holy becuase He was holy – without even having the Holy Ghost they were expected to live and be holy as a witness to what kind of God they served – in contrast to the ungodly religions of the heathen. This command in carried into the New Testament – Be ye holy; for I am holy. Our lifestyle is a testimony of who and what we worship and love.

    • I so agree with your statement:

“Obviously, the REAL church won’t abandon holiness – genuine holiness is a result of the presence of God’s Holy Spirit. ”

The REAL church won’t give in…and the church is built upon individuals who are REAL and stand firm for truth and holiness.

We are moving this summer and I hope to find a church that believes Christians are supposed to stand up and stand out from the world. This age of churches trying to be culturally relevant is bringing our churches down. 55. Why? Good question. Maybe for the same reason our country is in such a mess. Our country was founded upon Godly principles, but no longer stands on them. Our churches were also founded on Holiness along with the plan of salvation. We were known for being a peculiar people. Set apart. In the world, but not of the world. Who is really and truly standing on the morals and principles we were once built upon? Somewhere, somehow, Old Time Holiness has lost is value. We MUST as the true church of God, return to our roots and remember that Holiness is priceless. For without it, “… no man shall see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:14.

  59. I was a dorm matron at a recent UPC camp for ages 12-14, and I was saddened by the lack of standards enforced. Short skirts, low necklines, jewelry, makeup on the girls, and, as mentioned above, tight skinny jeans on the guys. I understand if a child is visiting and doesn’t know any better, but I’m talking about kids raised in church. Besides, everyone gets the same paperwork with guidelines for dress that has to be signed to show that you’ve read and will adhere to them. I was greatly dismayed, and inquired about it. I was told that a lot of parents and chaperones got offended by the enforcing of these dress codes, and so they (the leadership) stopped pressing the issue! WHY? It presents more of a challenge for me to teach and lead my children in the ways of holiness when their church friends are not following the same way, but I will press on! PREACH ON, ELDER!

    • I think the reason they are backing down is that it is all about numbers and money. The number of people they can get to attend their church and the amount of money that comes in from those people. I fear so many churches have become like businesses, What does a business do if their “customers” complain, they fix the “problem”. For some church leadership, the problem of losing money and number of people attending is to back down and allow compromise.

      • I agree. It saddens me to see it becoming more prevalent in my church. I see the little girls wearing pants or outfits that have pants to them. I never put pants on my daughter growing up because I thought that if it was okay when she was little then it would be hard to stop something they were used to and comfortable in. So my solution was not to even offer the opportunity. It saddens my heart because we are supposed to come out from among them and be ye separate. I think my best compliments have been you must be pentecostal. I am proud to dress and look different. The sad part is that we don’t look so much different from the world anymore. My standards give me strength and my hair gives me power.

  62. I forgot to mention the females of the churches wearing their make-up (yes, ladies, it’s noticeable) not to mention the ear piercings, and jewelry that NEVER used to be allowed. No wonder these young people and adults don’t feel “different” from their “peers” as we did growing up – they aren’t. I’ve even seen them wearing their jeans (women/girls) out in public. Really? And apparently it’s all “acceptable” now. Far cry when I was growing up in the early 70’s as a teenager!

  64. While standards are at the discretion of a church’s pastor, I must say I am saddened by the loss of modesty in this generation.

It is the result of a generation more concerned with “freedoms” and “privileges” than encountering God. More evidence of this is their comments to counter your message here. The negative comments are all sarcastic, snide remarks with no real message.

  65. Guilty on this. It’s really becoming a norm in churches which is a sad truth. Years back I never wear skirt that will show knees or even legs but somehow influence come along the surprise and seeing how it really affect everyone else. As true Pentecostal, modesty is our uniqueness among others and we should retain that uniqueness for God’s glory. I am glad I have someone to rebuke me on this. As the bible says in Proverbs 27:5 – “open rebuke is better than secret love”. We need to get back on our basic modesty. ASAP!

  67. 1Ti 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; Well then, if knees and arms are tantalizing to the men of the church then necks are also. Apostolic women have built a fortress of hair do’s with attractive swirls and curls that reveal their neck which happens to be one of the most sensual parts of a woman’s body. So I am hoping that everyone of you perfect “Apostolic Ladies” are wearing blouses that cover every inch of your neck. Furthermore, none of you should be making eye contact with any man, as your eyes are alluring to the male population. The Apostolic culture has been turned into something that is hypocritical at best. We have expensive perfume, 50-100 pairs of shoes (some even more), with jeweled broaches, hair pieces (flowers/bows) and purses to match all brightly colored and attracting to the eye. We have dresses that have enough material to cover every inch, but some of them are so tight it leaves nothing to the imagination. Sis. Lopez said it best at a women’s camp meeting a few years back when she pointed out that we spend more time doing our hair and finding something to where than we do in prayer. We have created a Pentecostal Peacock Peagentry with costly array and claim our appearance honors God. All the while, we are passing opinions on another sister’s attire and whether or not it meets OUR standard. How can any of this honor God? The very person that is focused on such issues has left their own relationship with God and began working on someone else’s walk with God. The scripture says we are to work out our OWN salvation and knees, arms, and necks have Zero to do with salvation and reaching the lost world! LOVE AND COMPASSION HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH LEADING THEM!!! I realize some Apostolic women have never worn make up. However, I also know that there are tricks of the trade, like pinching those cheeks to appear rouge red and clear mascara to have long lashes. What is the difference in applying the real stuff vs. creating the appearance anyway? There is none. I am pointing out the obvious, because the lost world we are trying to reach sees the very same hypocrisy. Preaching standards is dangerous ground if you are trying to reach souls. Last time I checked the Lord works from the inside out. Remember, if we are to preach the bible is always right, and it is, then we must stop attacking one another with standards in the name of holiness. The lost world sees this! Besides, we have no bible to back up the KNEE, ARM AND NECK argument. Furthermore, what is alluring to one man may not be to another. With all of this being said, I challenge every single one of you that has presented YOUR standard to pick up HIS word, study the bible culture, think of your own culture today then forget all of that. Ask yourself, what is my part in His plan and purpose? Then spend more time praying, fasting and loving the lost world more than you spend looking at brothers and sisters, shopping, and personal vanity. When the church began in ACTS He didn’t assign FASHION POLICE!!! What Jesus commissioned us to do had nothing to do with clothing, except the robe of righteousness ;-). It is my prayer that my writing has not caused any of your minds to question the length of my skirt, my sleeves, or my neckline and if it has I apologize and ask for forgiveness for being a stumbling block for a brother or sister in Christ. May God Bless everyone of you and may you win many souls to the Kingdom. In Jesus Name Amen. Jackie Polk

    • Wow, beautifully written. Bottom line, it is a heart issue. What we are seeing is what is in these people’s hearts. The closer people get to the Lord and study His Word, the less preacher’s will have to spend time preaching on this subject because ladies won’t want to grieve the Holy Spirit or cause another to stumble. I also believe that modesty should be taught in the home. Dad’s need to take a stand and protect their daughters by not allowing them to be immodest and mother’s should be teaching their daughters how to be modest. The bible also talks about the older women teaching the younger woman, which should be done with great love and compassion. If we would just get into God’s word as individuals and seek His face thru prayer then gossip, backbiting, slander, judging others would go away and we could love people into His Kingdom.

  70. I agree with this post and believe in modesty in the way that we dress. I teach modesty to my children and believe in separation from the world.

But there is something that concerns me as much as seeing knees in church…and that is many of the replies that I’ve read here.

I think it’s important that we don’t confuse standards with holiness. Just because you’ve never worn a denim skirt doesn’t make you holy.

In fact, we have to be careful not to become the ‘whited sepulcher’s’ that Jesus spoke about in Matthew 23.

It’s possible to have the dress code down and not have love and compassion for people.

In my opinion….one thing worse than dressing immodestly is to dress modestly with a bitter hard spirit.

It’s easy to get the things right that people can see and have spirits that are totally against what God desires for us.

I’m not disagreeing with the article though…we love Bro Ballestero.

I’m referring to “Incrementalism” (little changes over a period of time that lead to more and more changes that, brought on in small increments, get “accepted” and what was wrong eventually is touted as being “right” (maybe politically correct). The fact that “man” accepts these changes, does not make them right.

  82. The reason things like this are happening in the church is because we have pastors and churches that don’t preach standards and “APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY”, they care more about their reputation than they do about preaching the truth. I am not rebuking no spiritual elders but too many pastors today look at their saints as $$$$$$$$ and a number for the congregation. What would John The Baptist say to the church today? What would Apostle Paul and Apostle Peter say?. The Apostolic Church needs some good old fashion hell fire and brimstone preaching, preachers that will preach hell hot.

If you didn’t have family you were adopted by one in the church who made, sure you had somewhere to spend the holidays and sppecial days, as well as other times. I wish I could find a church like that today. I miss the old time Pentecost.

    • They are just like the rest of religion, they come in through the door ( Jesus) then they just stand there, they never grow, sad part is some that have been in church for years seem to revert to their former life style, They stand in the door and stop others from coming in and others from growing because of the example they live. We are the only bible some ever read. It is a disgrace. Pastors that condone such will give an account on judgement day. Time to get back to the old paths.

  85. I’ve even heard of some churches building what they call “modesty walls” for their praise singers to sit behind after they are finished singing because their skirts are so short that their knees are shining when they sit down…for shame!!

  86. Our pastor, Joel Holmes, preaches it. We hear it a couple times a year at least. He even puts it in the schedule for anyone that will be on the platform and he includes that tights with designs in them are also not allowed because they can easily distract the attention.

  88. What offends me just as much, in the tiny little tight skirts made out of stretchy, slinky material. They are made so they will stretch down over the largest part of a woman’s hips, leaving absolutely nothing to the imagination. Underneath, they dress inappropriately as well… In order to hide any lines that may show through the tightness. They seem to feel totally comfortable as they shout, dance, jump and bounce up and down the aisles in honor to God…. This popular way of dressing sure does make it difficult to keep our eyes on the Lord. Especially our men folk. Yet I have yet to hear one single sermon about this. Instead I hear, God gives convictions…

  91. Elder,
Love the post the first time I read it. I have 4 women in my house. My wife and I rarely have to say much to our girls about the length of their skirts. They know when it’s too short. I believe loose Pentecost knows as well, they just don’t care. They block the voice of the internal preacher, Holy Ghost conviction. By Gods grace I will never let down. Sad to say better men than me have. I weep.
    Say on Elder!

  92. Thank you!!! I agree, said the same thing a year or so ago, never got a response, don’t look for a invite to preach very many places not a popular message but truth anyway, keep in the fight it will pay off in the end. Thank you again

  93. Amen! This is so sad but true as well as many other things that seem to be sneaking its way in. Lord help us to stand firm for Truth and the highway of holiness.

  94. It is not only knees being seen but also imprints of the backside and private areas of the front on women/ girls wearing tight skirts/dresses! An embarrassment to all we know as Apostolic/Pentecostal Oneness! Shameful!

  95. I agree. Modesty seems to be a thing of the past. I see more pants on our young girls than dresses. When my daughter was young they were not allowed. It makes me sad to see our standards slowly dwindling away. I see people who hold positions wearing immodest apparel, make-up, jewlery, and more. One thing that drew me to pentecost was the standards. I think people in the world are looking for something that changes them and not one that allows them to stay the same. The Bible hasn’t changed, so why have our standards.

  96. If we are once convicted, we should always be convicted.

Fashion should not dictate our opinions on this matter. We’ve seen it in our church, as well. When the fashion changed, then some people changed back to a more holy standard.

It makes some hearts very sad!

  97. I read this article a while back but never commented and just felt like doing so, now. Contrary to what the unwittingly falling-away church might think, this issue is not legalistic. It is evidence of a spiritual condition; it is fruit.

Psalms 37:4 says, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” This verse doesn’t mean that God will give us what we want. It means that He will cause our desires to align with His will. And when will He do this thing? God will give us proper heart desires when we delight ourselves in Him. The reason knees (and other evidences) are showing up more and more in our churches is because people are delighting in something other than God. They love God in some way and still want His favor, but they have set their deepest affections on something other than Him.

  98. Even when teens buy their clothes, parents should police them and not make excuses that “she bought that with her money,” or “I cant tell her how to spend HER money.” When a teen is living under a parent’s roof, that is exactly what one should be doing!! That is why we are called parents!! And dont ever let them use “the others are doing it!!”
The OTHERS all worshipped the golden calf!! And dads need to be just as vocal….
