Can You Pass The Hurt Test?

Can You Pass The Hurt Test?

Dave sat on the bar stool, drinking with some buddies from work. His head was feeling a little light. He drank enough beers to loosen up his tongue, and he began to talk. “If it wasn’t for me, they wouldn’t have a decent church building.

“I mowed the grass every week without ever being paid. I replaced all the broken window panes with money out of my own pocket. I never asked to be reimbursed. I hauled off all the trash, free of charge. I was the self-appointed janitor and maintenance man of the church. I did it for years, willingly and without pay.

“Every evening I would stop by the church when I got off work to see if I needed to fix anything. I’ve kept the church building repaired and I’ve kept it clean for years. No one has ever paid me a dime to do anything. Why, even last summer, instead of taking my family on a vacation, I used the money to buy shingles and I roofed the church by myself. I paid for every dime of it too!

“Then two weeks ago, they had a business meeting. They needed to choose another Trustee. My name never even came up. After all I’ve done, no one seemed to appreciate it enough to mention my name.

“What’s a man got to do to get recognized or be a Trustee over there? It must be politics or something. That’s why I’ve quit going to that church.”

Dave backslid because he couldn’t pass the Hurt Test!

Lynn wrote the Pastor a check to purchase 20 beautiful white folding tables and 160 matching folding chairs for the church fellowship hall.

It brought Lynn much joy to be able to buy these. God had blessed her and she wanted to give something back. The pastor had recognized her gift from the pulpit and the congregation clapped their approval. Lynn smiled.

The tables and chairs were ordered and everyone at the church was excited. These were well made and expensive.

Just before they arrived, Lynn had to be out-of-town for three weeks. When she returned and stopped by the church, she didn’t like where the tables and chairs had been stacked. She especially didn’t like how they had been stacked. Her gift to the church was being treated with carelessness, she thought.

These tables and chairs were not cheap, and if the people of this church didn’t appreciate her sacrifice enough to treat it any better than this, then she just could go to another church.

Lynn moved on because she couldn’t pass the Hurt Test!

The Hurt Test, Part 1 – Insults

The Syrophenician woman stood in front of Jesus. She was breaking custom and protocol and she knew it. The Jews had nothing to do with the likes of her. But she had an emergency. Her daughter had an unclean spirit. Her desperation drove her to see this Jesus everyone talked about.

She crumbled and fell at His feet when she came near. With great urgency she begged Him to heal her daughter.

Jesus looked down upon the woman and said, “It is not proper to give the children’s portion to dogs.”

On other days, if a Jew talked to her like that, she might have had a little something to say back. Today was different. Her daughter’s very life was at stake. There was no one else to turn to. She refused to get upset. She chose not to be offended for being called a dog.

She simply said, “Of a truth Lord, but even the dogs get crumbs that fall from the children’s table.”

Jesus marveled at her and instructed her to go home, telling her that her request had been answered. She went home and found her miracle waiting for her there.

The Syrophenician woman easily passed the Hurt Test. She chose not to be offended because of insults!

The Hurt Test, Part 2 – Rejection

King David was a man after God’s own heart. As the King in Israel, he could build anything he wanted. When David told God that he was planning to build Him a house to worship in, God said, “No.”

God told David that he was a bloody man and that building Him a house of worship wouldn’t be appropriate. The Lord said, “I want your son Solomon to build it for me. Solomon hadn’t even thought of building a Temple. He had exhibited neither burden nor passion to do so up to that point. The desire had originally been only David’s.

Rather than pout or get offended because God had rejected his offer, David helped his son, by supplying him with most of the materials needed to build the Temple. If he couldn’t build the Temple, then he was going to help someone else build it.

David easily passed The Hurt Test. He chose not to be offended by God’s rejection of his service, and His choosing another’s.

Extra Credit Test Questions

  • If someone else is asked to sing a special. Can you still worship with them and help them sing?
  • If someone else is asked to preach. Can you still say amen and help them preach?
  • If someone else is asked to lead. Can you joyfully follow?

The Hurt Test, Part 3 – Loss

Job had everything any man could want. He had a relationship with God. He had a wife and wonderful children. He owned vast herds of cattle, camels and sheep. He was no doubt the wealthiest man in the world.

Then the dark day of disaster dawned upon him. In a matter of hours, he lost his children, his herds and all of his wealth.

The second attack upon him was his health. Boils covered his body. He scratched them with shards of broken pottery.

His friends were sure that he had sinned and this was the judgment of God. His wife suggested he curse God and die.

Job told his wife that she was talking like one of the foolish women. He said that if God lets me die, I am going to die trusting Him. I am going to keep on living for Him like I always have.

Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

Job passed The Hurt Test. He chose not to be offended at God because he had lost everything. In the end, God blessed him with double wealth and more children!

Extra Credit Test Questions

  • When you lost your job, house, or car, did you also lose your praise too?
  • When you were voted out of office or removed from a leadership role, did you show a bad attitude?

The Hurt Test – The Apostle Paul’s Summary

2 Corinthians 11:24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.

2 Corinthians 11:25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

2 Corinthians 11:26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

2 Corinthians 11:27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

Even with a permanent “thorn in his side,” Paul passed The Hurt Test! He ignored his problems and encouraged everyone around him to “Rejoice evermore.” He said it again in the same breath, “Rejoice!” He even had Silas rejoice with him in prison and the Lord delivered them and all the prisoners, too.

Getting Help Passing The Hurt Test

Jesus stood and read from Isaiah 61 in the Synagogue. He sat down, looked at them all and said, “This day is the scripture fulfilled in your hearing.”

Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

Isaiah 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Besides bringing salvation and healing, the other ministry of our Lord is to heal all hurts and bind up the broken-hearted. He can help you pass The Hurt Test.

I Wouldn’t Miss It For The World!

with 9 comments

I Wouldn’t Miss It For The World!

We’ve all been invited to a lot of family celebrations, parties and church events. In our vast catalogue of responses when being put on the spot, we’ve all given the host or hostess  great assurance with our off-handed reply. We say, “I wouldn’t miss it for the world!”

  • We have said that about birthday parties and anniversaries.
  • We have said it about school presentations and graduations.
  • We have said it about retirement parties and family reunions.
  • We have used that line when invited to a special church service.
  • We have used that line most of our adult life.

It’s just a common response to a myriad of invitations. You might call the statement overused or hyperbole, and normally you would be right, but not this time. This time it’s for real!

This time I’m talking a Heaven. Isn’t Heaven what I’ve have lived my whole life for? Isn’t Heaven the goal and the conclusion of my Christian walk?

Why then would I miss it for the World? What does the World have to offer that surpasses what Heaven has? Why would I throw away Heaven, for the World? Does anyone really believe that trading Heaven for the World is a good deal?

I cannot remember not loving Jesus. I have no memory of not wanting to see Him and be in Heaven. I want to see Him now more than ever.

The saints of God believe that when we get to Heaven, we shall know one another. I do too.

1 Cor 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Since the recent passing of my sainted Mother, my thoughts have once again turned Heavenward. She joins my godly Father, and my beloved sister, Beverly Anne in Heaven. They are now part of that ‘great cloud of witnesses’ that awaits our arrival. I rejoice over the fact that my parents and my sister lived glorious and Spirit-filled lives. I can’t wait to see them too!

  • All these years, I’ve sung songs about Heaven!
  • All these years, I’ve thought about Heaven!
  • All these years, I’ve preached about Heaven!
  • All these years, I’ve dreamed about Heaven!

Is Your Ship Sinking?

with one comment

Is Your Ship Is Sinking?

No likes the thoughts of a ship sinking, especially if they are on board. The knowledge that it is sinking would surely bring reactions of horror and panic to us all!

Current Ship Sinking Statistics.

According to Wolfgang Rosenthal, the Senior Scientist with the GKSS Research Center, at least two large ships sink each week, or about 100 per year.

The same scientist also mentions that 200 super tankers or container vessels over 200m in length have sunk over the last 20 years, or 10 per year in this class of ship.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_times_a_year_do_ships_sink#ixzz1PqEAOt00

The sinking of most ships never seems to be investigated with the same fervor as an air crash.  Normally, the sinking of a ship is written off as a result of bad weather.

The Plimsoll Line

In the 1800’s, overloaded merchant ships often sank in stormy seas.  Over 500 English ships sank in one year alone. They were so overloaded with merchandise, that all it took was one good storm to sink them. Sailors sometimes called them ‘coffin ships’.

An Englishman named Samuel Plimsoll devised a means to calculate the capacity of a ship. He produced a formula that determined how much cargo each vessel could safely handle in stormy waters. He then  determined where to draw a line on each ship to mark its capacity.  The ship was to sit no lower in the water than the marked line and still be considered safe. For many years it was simply referred to as the Plimsoll Mark. In more modern times the name has been changed to The International Load Line.

Two different times in the New Testament, the Disciples had near death experiences. Their ships were on the very verge of sinking, but for different reasons.

A Ship Sinking Because Of The Storm.

Whether the ship is a cargo ship or a human life, they both face storms. Neither is exempt.

The beloved Disciples of Jesus encountered a life-threatening storm. Jesus was in the boat asleep. The waves were high and the winds were very strong. The boat began to take on water. So much water came into the boat that they all feared they would drown. Even with Jesus in the boat it looked like they were going under.

Luke 8:22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.

Luke 8:23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.

Luke 8:24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

The Storms of Life Happen To Us all.

  • Financial Disasters
  • Home Foreclosure
  • Unemployment
  • Heart Ache
  • Moral Failure
  • Church Problems
  • Consequences of Bad Choices
  • Family Turmoil
  • Marriage Problems
  • Health Problems

Our minds readily grasp the concept that our personal ship of life can sink in a bad storm. It’s only God’s mercy and divine intervention that any of us are here today.

All it might take to sink our ship is one good storm. If you are loaded down with the cares of life, if you are loaded down with pressures, troubles, worries and fears, then be careful. Storms can happen. One good storm could sink you.

Even though we live for the Lord, that doesn’t mean we can avoid all storms. The only thing that kept the Disciples’ boat from sinking was that they called on Jesus. Call on Jesus still works today!

A Ship Sinking Because Of A Blessing.

The bad news can get worse. It is one thing to have your boat sink because of a storm, but there is also the possibility of your ship sinking because of a blessing. Imagine sinking in good weather with calm seas.

Luke 5:4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

Luke 5:5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

Luke 5:6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

Luke 5:7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

Their ship was filled to overflowing with the largest catch they had ever gotten. And it started to sink. They did ask for help however, to keep them from sinking.

We pray almost all of our lives for God’s blessings. Some prayers for blessings are just generic in nature, I know. Yet there are some blessings we’ve prayed for that if we had gotten them, they quite possibly might have overwhelmed and sunk our little boat.

Imagine, our ship sinking because of a blessing! Some folks seem to be blessed with everything in life.

  • Jobs,
  • Money
  • Ability
  • Success
  • Power
  • Good Fortune
  • Position

Their financial and earthly blessings sometimes have caused their spiritual boat to flirt with disaster. Too many have sunk while their ship was loaded down with blessings.

The same God who knows how much storm your ship can handle, also knows how big a load of blessings it can handle too. Trust Him.

When the Disciples saw they were sinking, they chose not to go down quietly. They wished to keep their blessing and keep afloat at the same time. What did they do? They called for help! That lesson is 2,000 years old, but it is still good advice today.

Is Your Ship Sinking? It Doesn’t Have Too!

Streams In The Desert

with one comment

Streams In The Desert

The weary traveler was hot and thirsty. His mouth was dry and his sunburned lips had not had water for more than a day. Hot wind seared his skin. His eyes were reddened from the sun and wind.

He could not see any shade in which to sit down and rest. There seemed to be no protection from the cruel elements. He was afraid. He had fallen twice already. If he fell again, he feared he would not have the strength to get up and go on. He could not stop. He had to get to the other side. The buzzards circled slowly over head watching his every step. They knew from experience, it was just a matter of time.

Crossing the desert in the summer was extremely dangerous. He knew that. Many men had died over the years trying to make it across in this heat. Skeletons by the trail was a harsh reminder.

His water was gone. His feet burned from the hot sand. The late afternoon sun was unmerciful. It was dangerously hot.

His eyes and mind had been playing tricks on him since mid-morning. The illusion of a shimmering water hole ahead had raised his hopes a few times. When he had gotten closer, he knew it was just a mirage. With dashed hopes, he still trudged on.

Although unsteady in his steps, he refused to stop. The strength he’d had yesterday was gone. He had walked through the night. He was tired. He was dehydrated. He knew that he was staring death in the face. But he kept walking. He had to make it.

With gritted teeth, he slowly climbed the small hill in his path. It took most of his remaining strength. He made it to the top, just barely.

Then he saw it. Unbelievable! A few trees, and some brush not far below. It looked like a stream of water too!

Surely it was just another mirage. There couldn’t be water flowing out here. Not here! Then by chance he saw a bee flying in that direction. Bees fly in a straight line towards water. He followed.

His hopes were raised. New vigor propelled him forward. He saw it! There it was, a stream a real stream.

The stream wasn’t noisy or loud. It was clear, it was cool, but most of all it was refreshing. The exhausted traveler fell to his knees and refreshed himself from the stream in the desert.

Is. 35:6 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.

All travelers in this life know the blessing of finding a “God provided stream” in their desert. If you will stop, drink and be refreshed. You can make it!

It’s Called Filth

with 4 comments

It’s Called Filth

My mother was an expert on pigsties. She came into my bedroom one day when I was in the 7th grade and told me that my room looked like a pigsty. She ordered me to clean it up, in no uncertain terms. I did. Mama had zero tolerance for filth.

I recently went with a pastor to visit some sick people in the hospital.  A small boy had contracted Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. He was 4 years old and refused to wear shoes indoors or out. His constant hand contact with his feet and then his mouth was a major issue.

His feet were covered with blisters, as well as his hands.  His mouth was full of them besides. The youngster was in a coma.

As I left the Hospital, I looked for the hand Sanitizer dispenser in the lobby by the front door. I used two dozes just in case one application didn’t catch all of the germs.

I shake dozens of hands before and after church. It’s important to me to be able to wash the fellowship off of my hands before sitting down to eat after service. I don’t want the germs from their unwashed hands in my mouth.

It doesn’t take much for germs to spread. I do not which to get germs nor do I wish to spread them.

There are times when I wish I could wash my mind and my thoughts because of what I heard or what I saw that day. We may call the influence of the world in our lives by nicer names, but I’m afraid that most of it falls under the classification of filth.

Sometimes I wish I could pull my heart out and put it on the scrub board of God’s Mercy and scrub it clean. I wish I could scrub it clean of all impurities and filth. I am not talking about immorality, I’m just talking about the filth of this generation that swirls around us everyday. It’s called Life.

David even spoke of the same desire to be clean in Psalms. He also wanted to scrub away the filth of life and be clean so that he might be acceptable in the presence of the Lord.

Psa. 51:2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Psa. 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Peter warned us all that there would be a constant need to protect ourselves for the present evils of the age.

Acts 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

This indecent, unbecoming, uncomely, unseemly world of ours freely spreads it’s filth around every day. It infiltrates our ears, our eyes, our minds, and most of all our hearts. We must work constantly to keep ourselves pure.

1John 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

We have to do some washing ourselves. That is the reason why daily devotions and our prayer closet times are so important to keeping ‘disease free’ in a filthy and sick world.

Thank God for the altars in our churches. Thank God for a place where hearts can be scrubbed clean.

No Levite or Priest could enter into the Holy Place of God without first washing the filth off in the Laver, and neither can we. Every one of us needs to be washed on a daily basis.

Saints of old sang songs about being washed and being clean. I wish they still did.

Search Me, O God

  1. Search me, O God, and know my heart today,
    Try me, O Savior, know my thoughts, I pray;
    See if there be some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from every sin, and set me free.
  2. I praise Thee, Lord, for cleansing me from sin;
    Fulfill Thy word and make me pure within;
    Fill me with fire, where once I burned with shame;
Grant my desire to magnify Thy name.
  3. Lord, take my life, and make it wholly Thine;
    Fill my poor heart with Thy great love divine;
    Take all my will, my passion, self and pride;
I now surrender, Lord, in me abide.
  4. O Holy Ghost, revival comes from Thee;
    Send a revival, start the work in me;
    Thy Word declares Thou wilt supply our need;
For blessings now, O Lord, I humbly plead.

      The Fail Factor

      with 9 comments

      The Fail Factor

Prov. 24:16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

      Even good people make mistakes!

It’s Not About Falling Down – It’s About Getting Back Up

      1. We all need help; we just need it in different areas.
      2. We’ve all had failures, some small, some not so small.
      3. We ALL can come from a “setback” to a “comeback”.

      DEF. Webster: What Is Failure?

      1. The condition of not achieving the desired end or ends.
      2. Being found insufficient.
      3. Falling short.

Two Things Will Happen When You Fail.

      1. Recover, Draw Closer To God
      2. Feel Hopeless And Give Up.
        1. Think you can’t live it,
        2. Think you can’t be saved.
        3. Give up!
        4. Quit
        5. Run from God

      Prodigal Son

Luke 15:13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

Luke 15:14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

Luke 15:15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

Luke 15:16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

Luke 15:17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

Luke 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

Luke 15:19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

Luke 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

      Five Facts About Failure:

No One Is Exempt – We All Make Mistakes

Failure Warns Me There Are Things I Need To Change

      • Thoughts
      • Habits
      • Friends (Ye did run well, WHO did hinder you)
      • Actions
      • Activities
      • Job
      • Church Attendance
      • Personal Devotions

Failure Can Help Me Find God.

Failure Most Likely Removed Most Of My Pride,

      • Arrogance.
      • Need To Humbly Seek His Face.

Failure Reminds Me That My Own Flesh Is my Biggest Enemy

      I Recognize My Weakness

      • Anger
      • Lusts

Failure Is Not The Final Chapter

Missionary on the field today – Backslid 14 times as a young person!

Don’t Plan for Failure, Plan For Recovery!

      Why Do People Fail?

      1. A Conditional Commitment To Jesus Christ?
      2. A Limited Obedience To God’s Word?
      3. A Careless Attitude Toward Temptation?
      4. A Failure To Put First Things First?
      5. (Maybe a combination of reasons.)

      The Phases Of Failure

      The Reaction Phase

      1. Shock – I can’t believe it.
      2. Denial – Won’t admit blame.
      3. Blame – Adam/Eve
      4. Withdrawal – Hide in bushes
      5. Fear – Of more failure
      6. Anger – Mad at self, at own weakness.
      7. Shame – I can’t face anyone, I let everybody down.
      8. Depression – I’m hopeless, I’ll never amount to anything
      9. Despair – No use! Guess I’ll just give up!

      The Response Phase Is Crucial…

What Are You Going To Do?

      The Flight Response

      • Don’t run from God.
      • If God had given up on you, He wouldn’t bother reaching for you or dealing with your heart. He wouldn’t waste a sermon on you.

      The Repentance Response

      Don’t Ever Give Up.

      Luke 15:

The Shepherd (The Good Shepherd) Sought until he found the lost sheep. God hasn’t given up on you.

Woman With 10 Pieces Of Silver: (The Church) Lit a candle and swept until she found the coin. Thank God the Church doesn’t give up on you.

Prodigal Son didn’t give up on himself. He came to himself and came back home.

      God Knows About Human Failure.

God knows we will fail. “He knoweth our frame.”

      He’s ready to forgive.

      He sees beyond our failure.

      Failure:

      1. Made us pray.
      2. Made us humble.
      3. Made us try harder.
      4. Made us cautious.
      5. Made us thankful for His Mercy.
      6. Made us appreciate the power of the Blood.
      7. Drew us closer to the cross.

I Pray That None Of My Readers Ever Fail.

But if you do sin, you have an Advocate (A Defense Attorney)

1John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

If There Was No Hope. Why Would We Be Given A Defense Attorney?

Rom. 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Why Would Jesus Make Intercession For Us If There Is No Hope?

      THERE IS HOPE!!

Like the story of the prodigal son and his father, you’re not that far from home when:

      1. When you start getting hungry
      2. When your pride gets out of the way
      3. When your thoughts turn towards home
      4. When you come to yourself
      5. When you get up
      6. When you start coming home
      7. When the Father is watching for you
      8. When the Father runs to meet you
      9. When you humble yourself
      10. When you say you’re sorry
      11. When you wrap your arms around each other

You’re not that far from home. Come on home! Your failure is not what’s important now. What is important is that you’re heading home!

      The Obed-Edom Interview

      with 2 comments

Several years ago, I heard one of the most amazing sermons I will ever hear in my life. It was Bro. Kenneth Bow’s sermon about Obed-Edom. It was anointed and unforgettable.  His love for research and attention to historical facts makes this outstanding.

Please go to his blog and find the link or go to http://www.savecom.org/orderform.htm and get it for yourself. It will change your life.

      The Obed-Edom Interview

TBB: Welcome Obed-Edom, to The Ballestero Blog. I’m so glad you agreed to grant me a short interview today. I’m very honored to have you here. I know that you are a very busy man.

OE: I am pleased to be here. Thank you for the opportunity.

TBB: For the record, you are of the tribe of Levi, and of the family of Korhite. You’re also from Gath-Rimmon if I remember. That makes you a Gittite?

      OE: That’s true.

TBB: And let’s see here…you and your wife have 8 sons?

OE: That we do, counting my sons and grandsons, there are 62 men in my family. It’s never quiet at my house.

TBB: Whew. I can imagine. Tell me, what’s a day like in the life of Obed-Edom?

OE: Well, the first thing every morning after daybreak, I get a report from my Gate Security Office concerning the activities of the past night. I report then to the King. At 9 am I go to Prayers every morning, then later in the day I have either choir practice or orchestra practice. I check on the Storehouse during the day also.

TBB: The Gate Security Office. That’s right, you are in charge of keeping the gates of the city of Jerusalem secure. Let’s talk about that first. So then, is Captain Obed-Edom your official title?

OE: (Nodding modestly) Don’t call me captain. My guards do that out of respect. My friends just call me by my name.

TBB: How many men do you command as the Keeper of the Gate?

OE: Right now, about 1,000. My sons and grandsons included. I might add that we also are in charge of the storehouse as well.

TBB: Wow. The King must really trust you to commission you to this post.

OE: We’ve been friends for quite a while now. I’m honored to do everything I can for My God, my King and for Israel.

TBB: How long have you known King David?

OE: A long time. Remember when the King was transporting the Ark to the Tabernacle and there was a problem and Uzzah touched the Ark and he died because the Lord smote him?

      TBB: Yes.

OE: I know it was the Lord that my house was close by, but it didn’t hurt that out of all the houses in the area, the King chose mine as the place to put the Ark. Our friendship, no doubt, helped make that choice easier. It may have made a few of my neighbors a little jealous though.

TBB: I’m sure. How long was the Ark in your home?

      OE: About 3 months.

TBB: What was it like to have the Ark in your home?

OE: It was THE biggest Blessings of my life. When I say my home was Blessed, I mean Blessed with a capital B. My finances were blessed, my herds multiplied from that time on. Our health mysteriously improved over night. Everything I touched seemed to turn to gold. It’s never stopped.

TBB: How wonderful. You’re the only man in Israel that has had that honor.

OE: I know. I am thrilled that my house was home for the Ark of God, even for a brief time.

TBB: What was it like after the Ark was moved from your house to where it is now?

OE: I don’t know. I couldn’t bear the thoughts of staying in that house without the Ark in it. So I moved too.

      TBB: You moved?

OE: Yes I did. After our home was blessed like it had been because of the Ark., my wife and I decided that wherever the Ark was, that’s where we wanted to be. So we moved here and bought a house just to be close by. Here, I can look in the direction of where the Ark sits and know I am close to His presence. There’s nothing like being in the presence of Jehovah. I wish everyone could have experienced that.

TBB: I do too. That’s amazing. You mentioned about choir practice and orchestra earlier. That’s because you are the worship leader?

OE: Actually Asaph is the Chief Musician and there are 68 others that do what I do. I’m just honored to be part of the worship. We all take turns. You might laugh at me, but after my experience with the Ark, I volunteer for every opening that Asaph has. I’m willing to be a singer or a musician. Sometimes I get the job, sometimes I don’t, but they can count on my name being on the list. I do my best to stay involved.

TBB: You have one of Israel’s greatest hero’s in your lineage. Samuel, the Prophet and Judge, is one of your ancestors!

      OE: That’s true!

TBB: He’d sure be proud of you if he was alive today.

OE: That’s kind, thank you. I hope he would.

TBB: It’s common knowledge that King David is proud of you too and wrote Psalm 24 in your honor. That’s a very high honor.

OE: Yes it is. It is the highest of honors the King can bestow me. It is worth more to me than great riches. I am greatly honored by that and yet humbled as well.

TBB: Can you remember any of that Psalm offhand?

      OE: I sure can:

“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

“For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

“Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?

“He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

“He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

“This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.

“Lift up your head, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

“Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

“Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.

TBB: That’s a beautiful Psalm. Every family has a skeleton in the closet or some dark family secret. I know you’re probably wishing I wouldn’t bring up yours, because I imagine it’s uncomfortable for you.

OE: No, actually I’m glad you did. It’s really Okay; I want to talk about it. I believe that event was what reshaped the future of our whole family.

TBB: We’re talking about Korah, your ancestor and what happened to him, Is that correct?

      OE: Yes.

TBB: In respect of where you are now and the high stations your family now holds, how did you tell your sons about your family’s dark days?

OE: Well Korah, as you know, was a very prominent leader in our tribe when Israel was in the wilderness. He was quite influential as well. I just hate it that he let pride and ambition get in his heart and got crossed up with Moses and Aaron. He was wrong. His thinking led him into rebellion. His actions invited the wrath of Jehovah.

TBB: I remember the Rabbi reading about the ground opening up and swallowing the rebellious men, and fire coming out of heaven. Then there was that plague that came because some sympathizers accused Moses of getting the people of God killed. 14,000 of them died in that plague. When I first heard the story, I thought the sons on Korah perished along with their father.

OE: Those living a home did, but not all. Some of Korah’s sons were married and living in their own homes when judgment fell. They loved their father, but they did not join him in his rebellion. Our family has handed down the story that when they saw they’re lives were spared; they fell on their faces and prayed. From that time on, all the sons of Korah have been extremely careful about our attitude concerning the House of God and the man of God. We have all been very respectful of our leader and submit ourselves to him. We refuse to let God have a problem with us again. We are thankful God doesn’t hold the sins for our father’s against us. I stress the importance of the fear of God and respect for God’s man to my sons lest history should repeat itself.

TBB: An amazing story. Your life lessons to your sons are extremely powerful as well. You mentioned the sons of Korah. Word on the street is that when King David fled from Absalom and went into hiding, the sons of Korah went with him to protect him. Do you know anything about that?

      OE: I’ve heard that too.

TBB: There are a number of Psalms that are written just for your family to sing.  That’s a very special honor. Since that includes you, maybe you could share your thoughts on a few of them or at least tell us about them.

OE: Thank you, it would be my pleasure. Well, the first one that comes to mind is the one that starts out… “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”

That’s from Psalms 42. I love that one. That’s how I feel. I cry sometimes when we sing Psalms 43 and it gets to the part where it says: “Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”

When I sing those words, the memory of my family’s dark past comes to mind. Then I see that God has blessed me more than anyone. I just can’t keep quiet about it.

      TBB: That’s beautiful.

OE: Psalm 46 starts out with: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

I need to sing that song some days. Then there are other days we feel like dancing while we’re singing. See if you remember this one from Psalm 47. “O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.”

I really love that one. The last one I’m going to talk about is one I can’t just quote. Would you mind if I sing a few lines?

TBB: Please do. I would love it.

OE: If you know what’s happened to my family, then maybe you can understand why I love to sing Psalms 84.

      TBB: Sing it.

OE“How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts!

“My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.

“Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.

“Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.”

TBB: Thank you for that. You have a beautiful voice.

OE: Every time I sing that last line, I am reminded how blessed I am to be close to the House of God. I thank Him everyday.

TBB: I’m about out of time.  What word of wisdom or advice can you give me before you go?

OE: I’ve been honored to be here. Thank you for giving me a chance to speak about my passion. As far as imparting any wisdom to you, I can’t do much better than this. This one is from the 88th Psalm, which is another one written just for the sons of Korah to sing.

“Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

“I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

“For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.”

We must walk in truth, fear God, praise Him with all of our hearts, and then God will find a way to deliver us and to bless us. That about sums it up for me.

TBB: That it does. It sums it up for me too. Thank you for coming and God bless you.

It Always Happens At Church Time

      with 2 comments

It Always Happens At Church Time

Why do the worst things happen about church time? It keeps some folks from coming, makes others have to leave and disrupts the service. it’s no accident. Read these references and see a pattern.

Israel was required to have a morning and evening sacrifice. That was their custom.

      • Num. 28:3 And thou shalt say unto them, This is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto the LORD; two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering.
      • Num. 28:4 The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at even;

From Scripture we know that the ordinary services of the sanctuary consisted of the morning and evening sacrifices.  According to general agreement, the morning sacrifice was brought at the “third hour,” corresponding to our 9am. This may explain how on the day of Pentecost such a multitude could so readily “come together,” Seeing it was the third hour, they would all be in the temple.

      • The Morning Sacrifice was about 9:00am
      • Josephus puts the evening sacrifice down at the ninth hour or 3pm.

Elijah stopped the pagan worship on Mt. Carmel at the time of evening sacrifice.

      • 1Kings 18:27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
      • 1Kings 18:28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
      • 1Kings 18:29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

Goliath came to threaten, challenge and intimidate the people of God, every morning and evening.

      • 1Sam. 17:16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
      • Goliath came at church time.
      • He knew he was being disruptive.
      • The Israelites were trying to have church.
      • He kept on intimidating them.
      • The devil trying to hinder a church service is nothing new.
      • It’s an age-old tactic. Every service has it’s own battle.
      • Don’t be intimidated, or lose heart.
      • Goliath will come, but we’re not ignorant of his methods.
      • Keep on singing.
      • Keep on praying.
      • Keep on shouting.
      • Keep on preaching.
      • Be encouraged.
      • The same God the helped David will help you get the victory!
      • Yes Goliath may come, but he will be defeated.
