So, When Do The Servers Eat?

with 3 comments

So, When Do The Servers Eat?

 Imagine Being In A Restaurant.

In the restaurant, we eat and enjoy our wonderful meal. We love being pampered and catered to. We are made to completely enjoy the experience… because of the servers. But, when do they ever get to eat? They just stay busy serving.

 Imagine Being In Church.

  • In church, we enjoy the worship,
  • We enjoy the song service,
  • We enjoy the talented musicians,

  • We enjoy the multimedia,
  • We enjoy the songs and scriptures up on the big screen,
  • And, we enjoy the clear crisp sound of every amplified voice.

  • We are made to completely enjoy the experience… because of the servers.
  • But when do they get to eat?
  • They are so busy serving us that they don’t stop to eat when everyone else eats.

When Do The Musicians Get To Sing?

  • How long do they have to go without worship?
  • How long can their spiritual man survive without food?

How About The People In The Sound Booth?

  • Do those involved in multimedia ever get a chance to get blessed?
  • Are they restricted from raising their hands?
  • Are they so techie and committed to media and sound excellence, that there is no room for worship?
  • Is it improper for them to say, ‘Amen” while in the sound booth?

What About The Preachers On The Platform?

When Do The Servers In God’s House Get To Eat What Everyone Else Gets To Eat?

  • How long can you go without a blessing?
  • How long?
  • Has anyone noticed that worship from many of our musicians, multimedia/sound techs, and most of the platform is almost non-existent?

Haven’t they heard that worship is everyone’s business?

  • Worship is everyone’s duty!
  • Worship is everyone’s privilege!
  • No one is exempt!

It would almost appear, that those who have chosen to be in the sound booth and stay there without any response to worship, prayer, or to the preaching… are not showing any signs of a spiritual life.

One might think they have more knowledge of technical stuff in their heads than they have knowledge of God in their hearts.

How can you play an instrument unto the Lord, and you feel anything?

How can you as a minister request the saints to really worship the Lord, and yet you don’t set the example?

If David the King, could take off his golden crown and dance before the ark, why can’t we all take off the golden crown that represents our little office, and dance like David?

  • Am I being harsh, or unfair? No doubt. (I won’t even defend myself.)
  • I am a preacher. When do I get to partake and enjoy a worship service? (I’ve got to eat too!)
  • I am a musician. When do I get to lay my guitar down? When do I get to shout? (I’ve got to eat too!)

I am somewhat of a nerd. I’ve installed sound equipment and set up computers in a number of churches and ran their multimedia for them. When do I get to come out of the sound booth and praise the Lord? (I’ve got to eat too!)

  • Never let your office or job put you in a position to stop rejoicing in the Lord.
  • Never think worship and responding to His presence is beneath you.
  • Never stop responding to preaching, no matter where you are seated in the church.

Is it just the carnal people who volunteer run the multimedia? Or do worshippers still exist back there too?

Is it the mindset of musicians to stay so focused on showcasing their talent that… that’s all it is? Or do worshippers still exist up there too?

Is it the attitude of ministry that they are so deep into the Word, that any demonstration is beneath them? Or do worshippers still exist there too?

I have no answers.

I only have one question.

When Do The Servers Eat?

The Get Run Over Church

with 5 comments

The Get Run Over Church

“Worship is everybody’s business,” my father said with fervor into the microphone! The song service had been going for twenty minutes or so and the church was getting close to breaking through into another level in the Spirit.

The same old six and seven who always worshipped with all of their hearts, still were. The rest just seemed content tonight to let them do the worshipping for them. This was not their lucky night. Dad wasn’t going to let them off that easy.

Don Zhiss

Big Don Zhiss was enjoying his liberty and began walking around with joy and praising God with great animation. He rolled on the floor. He ran the aisles. He kept running even though no one was following. His gray hair didn’t slow him down.

The song leader was doing a great job, but sometimes, the best of churches can get in a rut. Even good people need to break out of them once in a while.

There was a good spirit of worship in the house that night. The service was not dead. But like a cook tasting the food on the stove and saying, “I think it needs a little more salt.” That’s what my Dad was doing.

He said, “Alright, I want all of you men to get out in the aisles and worship. Men should be the leaders in worship in the church. Come on men. Get out of your comfort zones. Lift your hands in the air. You may not do what I do, but everybody ought to do something for Jesus!”

Like the good obedient people they were, the men gathered self-consciously into the aisles. Even the timid and quiet ones came too. The music was still playing and hands were still clapping.

Several pairs of eyes watched as Bro. Ted moved into the aisles. He had never ventured there in recent memory. He wasn’t a tall or big man. His timid and quiet nature made him seem smaller. He loved to pray, sing and clap his hands, but no one had ever seen him get demonstrative in praise before. They couldn’t wait to see what he would do.

It was quite an accomplishment for him. He stood by the 3rd row in the center aisle facing the pulpit. He raised his hands, closed his eyes and worshipped freely for several minutes. This was something! Bro. Ted was getting close to a breakthrough.

The saints were making real progress. Many were shouting and enjoying the presence of the Lord. People were speaking in tongues all over the house.

Big Don Zhiss began to feel what he called the ‘anointment.’ He felt that the Lord was impressing him to run the aisles, but in a new dimension. He just knew the Lord was telling him to run the aisles with his eyes closed.

Not being slow to respond, Bro. Don charged down the center aisle, full steam ahead. His nearly 300 pounds of mass caused smaller men to step aside, but not Bro. Ted.

Bro. Ted was clueless. His back was to Bro. Don and besides that, his eyes were closed too. All of the worshippers who believed in the ‘watch and pray’ concept, could sense impending doom.

Don hit Ted’s small frame like he was a leaf in the wind. Don barely stumbled. Ted was totally flattened out, face down.

Ted never opened his eyes. He slowly stood back up as concerned saints held their breath. Finally, he stood erect again. By this time, Don had made another lap and came charging down the aisle again.

Once more he waylaid Bro. Ted, and reduced him to a rag doll on the rug. Don didn’t seem to notice the damage he’d done.

Still, Ted tried to continue on without opening his eyes. He was so close to getting something from the Lord. He was finally able to rise up in a kneeling position with his hands still raised when Don came around the 3rd time.

Bro. Don made the corner and laid him out once more. By this time, Bro. Ted had all the worship he could enjoy. He crawled on his hands and knees back down his row and seemed to be content to praise the Lord in the safety of his own seat.

Bro. Zhiss kept running!

(Bro. Ted was never seen in the aisles again.)

The Desire To Be Cherished

with 2 comments

The Desire To Be Cherished

“They do not love that do not show their love.” – Shakespeare

It’s A Basic Life Need

Cherish – Definition:

  1. To hold Dear:
  2. To Cultivate with Care and Affection
  3. To Nurture
  4. To Treasure, Prize, Value
  5. To Feel And Show Affection For

Babies Desire To Be Cherished And Held.

babykissThey cry often for their Mama’s touch. Children run to her to be comforted.

When Babies Are Not Cherished:

I read a few years ago about Romanian orphans who were given only the basic nourishment and hygiene. Soon the babies became withdrawn and unresponsive. They may be forever emotionally damaged… much like adults who are not cherished. They will almost always exhibit emotional problems and act out.

All Children Desire to Be Cherished.

Every child remembers if they were loved. Everyone remembers how their parents treated him or her when they were young. Not being cherished is something most difficult to survive.

Little Kids Ask Their Parents.

Am I your favorite? Who do you love the most? How much do you love me? They are putting out feelers attempting to assure themselves that they are cherished.

Teenagers Desire To Be Cherished.

They dream about it. They sing about it. They listen to music about it. They want to be loved. They want someone to cherish them. To complicate the matter, their hormones rage out of control during the process.

Some girls never feel cherished by their father, so they seek elsewhere for male approval. They never felt cherished at home, so they look for someone to validate and approve of them. They want to be cherished.

Sadly, the title of the song: “Looking for Love In All The Wrong Places,” has more truth than fiction.

During Courtship Both Parties Practice Cherishing The Other Person.

  • They say sweet things.
  • They do sweet things.
  • Treat each other with tenderness.
  • The boy courts the girl and brings flowers and candy.
  • They overlook each other’s imperfections.

My Father-In-Law, the late William R. Starr, gave me some wise insight before I even asked his daughter out on a first date. He said, “Men love with their eyes, but Women love with their ears.”

Dad Starr was telling me in man-talk, that a woman wants to hear that she was cherished! He was a very wise man.

All Husbands And Wives Desire To Be Cherished

Every woman wants to know she’s #1. So does every man. When you hold your wife in your arms and tell Happy_Married_Coupleher that you love her, she wants to feel your words coming from your heart, and not just your mouth.

If you are a wise man, you will NEVER stop courting your wife and affirming your love for her and expressing it often. The words, “I love you!” have a very short shelf life. You need to say it everyday.

Flowers, cards, candy, dates and accomplishing ‘honey-do-lists’ with a smile, sure helps keep life wonderful at home.

Every Prospective Groom Says, “Will You Marry Me?”… Hoping he will be cherished and loved.

Every Prospective Bride Says, “Yes”… Hoping she will be cherished and loved.

To The Wife:

Don’t settle for less than being cherished. Likewise, cherish him. It’s a two-way street.

To The Husband:

Sir, you are to love your wife As Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. You won’t easily give your life for someone you don’t cherish. The Lord meant for the husband to cherish his wife with his very own life. It’s really not hard.

Jacob Cherished Rachel.

He worked seven years to get her as his wife, and was given the wrong one. The Bible just says: “It seemed but a few days, for the love he had for her.”

David Never Cherished Michal

He always referred her to as “Saul’s Daughter.” He never said that he loved her. He never referred to her as his wife. That may be a reason why she acted out so badly.

Proverbs 31 Wife

Proverbs 31:28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

“He Praiseth Her”: The word praiseth here is – Halal

HALAL – haw-lal’;

  1. To shine; hence
  2. To make a show, (let every one know)
  3. To be (clamorously) foolish; (enjoy with enthusiasm)
  4. To rave; (to go on and on with excited appreciation)
  5. To boast, (brag in public)
  6. To celebrate, (honor every achievement)
  7. To foolishly glory, (go overboard in expressing praise)
  8. To sing, (to express your emotion as deeply as possible, sing His praises.)
  9. To praise, (to say every nice thing you can)
  10. To rage, (to be wild about)

When joined with abbreviated form of God’s name “Yahweh” = Hallelujah. That’s where the word Hallelujah comes from. (Saying Hallelujah like saying 10,000 praises to Jehovah)

When a man goes to this extent, of ‘Halal-ing” his wife, she will feel cherished and will perform unbelievable things for her home and family because she knows she has the backing of the man she loves.

In like manner, when the same man goes to this extent to Halal The Lord Jesus… there is no telling what the Lord will do for him.

Not Everyone Has Been Cherished In Life, But There Is Great News!

God Cherishes His People.

They Are The Apple of His Eye

Zech. 2:8   For thus saith the LORD of hosts… he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.

  • (Warning: Don’t mess with any one the Lord cherishes!)

God Protected Israel In Goshen

  • Egyptian Dogs wouldn’t bark against the Israelites.
  • No Plagues came nigh them.

God Protected Israel In The Wilderness

  • Provided in wilderness.
  • No sickness.
  • No one’s clothes wore out.

God’s Desire To Be Cherished By Man

Yes, you say you love the Lord, but do you cherish him? Jesus wants to know for sure that you cherish Him before He can use you.

Jesus to Peter

John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

John 21:16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

David

Psalm 137:5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

Psalm 137:6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

He was saying he loved God’s house more than anything in the world. David also said, “Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

He cherished the things of God! God said that David was a man after His own heart. Was David perfect? Oh no. He was a long ways away from perfect. But the way he cherished everything about God, made God smile upon him.

The Jealousy of God – Is Another Way Of Saying He Just Wants To Be Cherished.

2 Timothy 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

God Desires Man To Cherish Him

Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

The Lord knows the difference between lip service and heartfelt expressions of love.

  1. Men that cherish God – Worship
  2. Men that cherish God – Come to His House

My Visit To See Marcia In 1965

Before our engagement, in the early stages of our courtship, I once closed a revival service on Sunday night in Fort Worth, TX and drove 24 hours straight through to Albion, MI… just to see a little Miss Marcia June Starr for one hour. I arrived after 10:30pm, left before midnight and drove two hours back to my home in South Bend, IN. It’s never a sacrifice to see the one you love.

You’re Not Faithful To God’s House?

Don’t tell me you cherish God and you can’t make it to church. You don’t cherish Him if you layout of church! It’s never a sacrifice to see the one you love.

Like David, we should all say, “I was glad when they said unto me let us go unto the house of the Lord.”

Jacob Cherished The Birth Right

Jacob had major character flaws I’m sure. But he cherished the same Birthright that Esau despised, so God chose to love Jacob and discard Esau.

God cherished Jacob and said, ‘Jacob Have I loved, and Esau have I hated.’

Make God love you too by cherishing those things, which are Godly and eternal.

Don’t Tell Me You Cherish The Lord Jesus…

  1. If You Don’t Pay Tithes.
  2. If You Hate Holiness.
  3. If You Aren’t Faithful To His House.
  4. If You Don’t Pray.
  5. If You Don’t Worship.
  6. If You Bring Disunity To His Church.
  7. If You Rebel Against His Word.

  1. Sing Like You Cherish Him.
  2. Pray Like You Cherish Him.
  3. Talk Like You Cherish Him.
  4. Dress Like You Cherish Him.

God is Jealous Of What You Cherish.

Amp Bible 1 John 2:15 Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him.

You Don’t Cherish The Lord If…

  • If Someone Has To Beg You To Come To Church
  • If Someone Has To Beg You To Worship
  • If Someone Has To Beg You To Pray

Think about the words the next time you sing: “So, I’ll Cherish The Old Rugged Cross”

The Old Rugged Cross

George Bennard 1913

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

   The emblem of suff’ring and shame;

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain:

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

       Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,

   Has a wondrous attraction for me;

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To bear it to dark Calvary.

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,

   A wondrous beauty I see,

For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,

   To pardon and sanctify me.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;

   Its shame and reproach gladly bear;

Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,

Where His glory forever I’ll share.

The Lord Cherished Us Even In Our Sins.

John 3:16    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

We love Him because He first loved us!

Here’s Your Homework For Today:

Tell Jesus that you love Him! Tell Him from your heart that you love Him. Yes, this very moment… say, “Jesus, I love you with all my heart!” Put your heart into it. He can tell.

Next, go tell your spouse and your family that you love them. Put your heart into it. They can tell.

Altar Call Songs

with 16 comments

Are You Old Enough To Remember These?

  • My wife Marcia and I put this Altar Call song list together back in 1999.
  • (These may be old songs from at least a generation or two back. But they still work!)

Finding the right song to play and sing for Altar Call is, in my mind, indeed a gift. Not everyone is blessed in that department. More often than not the right song sung at the end of a sermon can make all the difference in the outcome. If the song doesn’t ‘fit,’ if distracts in a noticeable manner.

This generation of musicians seems to have focused on the newer music alone, and not a few have ignored the older songs for altar call altogether. What a horrible loss!

Only the titles of some of the old songs are listed below. They are merely meant to be memory prompts. Either you know them or you don’t. I hope you do.

I thank every musician and singer for making any attempt to keep even a few of our old faithful songs alive.

MERCY THERE WAS GREAT AND GRACE WAS FREE
MORE OF THEE, MORE OF THEE, I HAVE ALL, BUT WHAT I
MOVE ME WITH YOUR MESSAGE
MUST JESUS BEAR THE CROSS ALONE
MY  HOUSE IS FULL, BUT MY FIELD IS EMPTY
NEAR THE CROSS
NEARING HOME
NO ONE EVER CARED FOR ME LIKE JESUS
NO ONE, NO ONE LIKE JESUS
NOW LET US HAVE A LITTLE TALK WITH JESUS
OH FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING
OH LORD HAVE MERCY
OH SOUL AWAY, SOON THE LORD SHALL COME, AND NONE…
OH WHAT A SAVIOUR
OH WHY NOT TONIGHT?
OH, IT IS JESUS, OH IT IS JESUS
ONE DAY TOO LATE
ONE TOUCH OF HIS HAND
ONLY BELIEVE
ONLY JESUS CAN SATISFY
ONLY TRUST HIM, ONLY TRUST HIM
PASS ME NOT
PEACE, PEACE
PENTECOSTAL FIRE IS FALLING
PRECIOUS BLOOD
PRECIOUS JESUS
REACH OUT AND TOUCH THE LORD
RENEW IN ME, THAT 1ST LOVE
SEARCH ME LORD, SEARCH ME LORD, SHINE THE LIGHT OF
SEARCH ME OH GOD
SEND IT ON DOWN, SEND IT ON DOWN
SERVE HIM WITH ALL OF YOUR HEART
SHELTERED IN THE ARMS OF GOD
SHUT IN WITH GOD, IN A SECRET PLACE
SIN CAN NEVER ENTER THERE
SOFTLY AND TENDERLY
SOME GLORIOUS DAYBREAK, JESUS WILL COME
SOMEDAY THERE’LL BE NO TOMORROW
SOMETHING GOT A HOLD OF ME
SPEAK MY LORD, SPEAK MY LORD
SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD, FALL FRESH ON ME
SWEEP OVER MY SOUL
TAKE IT ALL, TAKE IT ALL, WHAT THE WORLD
TAKE UP THY CROSS AND FOLLOW ME
TEACH ME LORD TO WAIT
TELL IT TO JESUS, TELL IT TO JESUS
THANK YOU LORD FOR SAVING MY SOUL
THE CROSS IS NOT GREATER THAN HIS GRACE
THE LIGHTHOUSE
THE LONGER I SERVE HIM THE SWEETER HE GROWS
THE OLD RUGGED CROSS
THE OLD RUGGED CROSS MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
THE UNSEEN HAND
THE WAY OF THE CROSS LEADS HOME
THE WORLD NEEDS JESUS, BUT WHY SHOULD I TELL YOU?
THERE’S A GREAT DAY COMING, A GREAT DAY COMING
THERE’S A SWEET, SWEET SPIRIT IN THIS PLACE
THERE’S NO ONE, NO ONE LIKE JESUS
THERE’S ROOM AT THE CROSS FOR YOU
THERE IS A FOUNTAIN FILLED WITH BLOOD
THERE IS A FOUNTAIN WHICH FLOWS FROM CALVARY
THERE IS A PLACE OF QUIETNESS
THERE IS COMING A DAY
THERE IS JUST NO PLACE LIKE HOME
THERE IS POWER, POWER
THROUGH IT ALL, THROUGH IT ALL…
THROW OUT THE LIFELINE
TO BE LIKE JESUS
TO BE USED OF GOD
TOMORROW
TOUCHING JESUS IS ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS
TRUST IN THE LORD, WITH ALL THINE HEART…
TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS
UNTIL THEN
WASTED YEARS
WE BRING A SACRIFICE OF PRAISE
WE DEDICATE THIS TEMPLE TO YOU LORD
WE HAVE COME INTO THIS HOUSE TO MAGNIFY THE LORD…
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD WE SERVE
WHAT CAN HE DO..
WHEN HE REACHED DOWN HIS HAND FOR ME
WHEN I SEE THE BLOOD
WHEN I WALK UP THOSE STREETS OF GOLD
WHEN JESUS BREAKS THE MORNING
WHERE COULD I GO?
WHERE HE LEADS ME, I WILL FOLLOW
WHERE WILL YOU BE A MILLION YEARS FROM NOW
WHILE I WAS PRAYING, SOMEBODY TOUCHED ME
WHO AM I THAT A KING
WHY DON’T YOU LIFT UP YOUR HANDS AND PRAISE THE LORD
WHY NOT TONIGHT?
WHY SHOULD HE LOVE ME SO?
YES I KNOW, JESUS BLOOD CAN MAKE..
YOU’VE GOT TO LIVE FOREVER SOMEWHERE
YOU CAN’T MAKE ME DOUBT IT….
YOU NEVER MENTIONED HIM TO ME
YOU WON’T LEAVE HERE LIKE YOU CAME

Making Melody In Your Heart

with 6 comments

Making Melody In Your Heart

Eph. 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

This verse is among the Paul’s final words to the church family in Ephesus. It is cloistered sweetly amid his fatherly farewell.

Paul, in a later epistle admonishes the saints of Philippi to rejoice aloud unto the Lord all the days of our life.

Phil. 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord I: and again I say, Rejoice.

Paul promoted vocal worship in the house of God. But while writing to the good folks in Ephesus, he shows a side of himself, which is most revealing. Paul evidently made a melody in his heart even in his darkest moments.

In those few words, he wrote of the importance of singing on the inside. He encouraged all of us to have a song in our heart, and if there was no song, then to make a song. Make a melody in your heart.

This encouragement came from a man who had been through the worst events that hell could manufacture. But he didn’t stop singing. When he couldn’t sing on the outside, he was doing it on the inside.

  • We knew him as a Missionary.
  • We love him as a writer.
  • We read about him as a preacher.
  • But Paul the singer?
  • Who knew?

Paul Kept Humming A Song.

2Cor. 4:8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;

2Cor. 4:9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

Paul Still Kept On Humming.

2Cor. 11:23… in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.

2Cor. 11:24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.

2Cor. 11:25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

2Cor. 11:26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

2Cor. 11:27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

2Cor. 11:28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

Paul Never Stopped Humming.

No matter what he had been through, he never allowed his circumstances to shut down his inner praise machine.

The story of Paul and Silas perfectly shows how quick Paul was to make melody in his heart unto the Lord. In spite of his pain, he sang.

Even though he had been beaten, his melody maker was still working.  Even though he was falsely accused and imprisoned he had a melody going on in his heart.

  • It was that melody that caused the earth to shake.
  • It was that melody that caused all of the prisoner’s chains to come off.
  • It was that melody that opened the prison’s doors for them.
  • It’s unimaginable what can come out of having a melody in your heart.

My precious and godly parents sang a song many years ago written by Ira Stanphill. It’s words still echo inside my heart.

You Can have A Song In Your Heart In The Night

Ira Stanphill

1. You can have a melody down in your heart

When it’s aching, almost breaking

Even though the sorrow makes the teardrop start

You can have a melody down in your heart.

CHORUS

You can have a song in your heart in the  night,

After every trial, after every mile

Anyone can sing when the sun’s shining bright

But you need a song in your heart at night.

2. Do not let your worries drive your song away,

Though tomorrow brings its sorrow

Just remember after night time comes the day

Do not let your worries drive your song away.

3. Soon the night will pass and morning bring the day

I am longing for its dawning

Until then we’ll labour here and watch and pray

Soon the night will pass and morning bring the day.

That Was A Lousy Performance

That Was A Lousy Performance

per·for·mance

n.

1. The act of performing or the state of being performed.

2. The act or style of performing a work or role before an audience.

3. The way in which someone or something functions.

4. A presentation, especially a theatrical one, before an audience.

5. Something performed; an accomplishment.

Our carnal minds are impressed with performance, be it speed, strength or skill. We use words like ‘Awesome’ to describe a ‘performance’ we enjoyed.

All of us love a song and a singer that pleases our ears. The skillful playing of an instrument fascinates us. It is easy for us to go away feeling awed because of the performance of the musician, singer or speaker.

It’s not that it’s so wrong. It’s actually very normal. Even the Psalmist said in Psalms. 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

From this scripture, it even looks like heaven enjoys a good performance.

≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈

Yet it’s possible that we bring that mindset over into the area of preaching, testifying and special singing.

Nothing deflates our ego any quicker than to feel like we weren’t at our best, or that the crowd response was less than we’d hoped for.

Most every preacher knows what’s it’s like to want to just leave the building as soon as he finished a sermon that didn’t ‘go over’ well. There have been times when a trap door hidden behind the pulpit seemed like a good idea to me.

I’ve seen young singers cry after they went down off of the platform because their song didn’t come out as good as they’d planned.

The devil has told some that stood and testified in a church service that they had made a mess of their testimony and they should never testify again.

Remember the story of the Sower? (Actually the parable is more about the soil than the sower.)

He sowed everywhere he could on his property. He didn’t get good results everywhere. Nevertheless he was faithful in the sowing of the seed.

Performance never entered his mind when he walked into the field that morning. It didn’t make any difference if he sowed with his right hand or his left hand. All he had to do to get a crop was sow the seed. He was just going to sow the seed until he had planted everywhere he could.  The power was in the seed, not in him.

If he had sown the seed in our present day ‘church’ fields, we would have expected him to jump up about 2 feet high, click his heels and then power slam the seed into the ground. People would have stood to their feet and screamed ‘Amen’ and maybe a few even run the aisles.

Then all of the critics of sowers would have said, “Man, that’s really sowing the seed! That’s the kind of seed sowing we like around here. He really did an awesome job of sowing the seed.”

We’re so afraid someone will think or say, “That was a lousy performance.” We would be devastated because we are conditioned with a performance mindset.

Yet all of us know that performance has nothing to do with the sowing of the seed. In actuality it may even slow down the process. If the sowing of the seed has to wait until we get done with our performance then heaven may not be pleased.

All the sower has to do is just let go of the seed. Nature and the seed take over from there. He did his job. It didn’t have to be pretty. It didn’t have to be powerful. It didn’t have to be exciting. It just had to be released.

I’m not calling for an end to good preaching and singing. Neither am I asking for any of us to not do our best. What I am asking for is for you to not be disheartened by your own sense of ‘failure’ when your ‘performance’ doesn’t turn out like you wanted. Remember. You are sowing the seed. Seed sowing doesn’t require performance to be effective.

Just sow the seed. Sow it in a song, sow it in a testimony or sow it in a sermon. Forget about performance. Don’t let Satan steal your song, shut your mouth or make you discouraged. When it leaves your hands, God takes over.
