Be Fervent, But Don’t Be A Pharisee

Don't Be A

“The Pharisees were the most numerous and influential of the religious sects of Jesus’ day. The were strict legalists. They stood for the rigid observance of the letter and forms of the Law, and also for the Traditions.

There were some good men among them, no doubt, but for the most part they were known for their covetousness, self-righteousness and hypocrisy.” –Bible-History.com

The Pharisee

“There was probably no town or village inhabited by Jews which had not its Pharisees, although they would, of course, gather in preference about Jerusalem with its Temple, and what, perhaps would have been even dearer to the heart of a genuine Pharisee–its four hundred and eighty synagogues, its Sanhedrims (great and small), and its schools of study. There could be no difficulty in recognising such an one. Walking behind him, the chances were, he would soon halt to say his prescribed prayers. If the fixed time for them had come, he would stop short in the middle of the road, perhaps say one section of them, move on, again say another part, and so on, till, whatever else might be doubted, there could be no question of the conspicuousness of his devotions in market-place or corners of streets. There he would stand, as taught by the traditional law, would draw his feet well together, compose his body and clothes, and bend so low “that every vertebra in his back would stand out separate,” or, at least, till “the skin over his heart would fall into folds” (Ber. 28 b). The workman would drop his tools, the burden-bearer his load; if a man had already one foot in the stirrup, he would withdraw it. The hour had come, and nothing could be suffered to interrupt or disturb him. The very salutation of a king, it was said, must remain unreturned; nay, the twisting of a serpent around one’s heel must remain unheeded.” – Alfred Edersheim

Pharisees As Portrayed By Matthew’s Gospel

Pharisees Are Called Snakes By John The Baptist

Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Pharisee Righteousness Is Insufficient

Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Pharisees Are Murderous

Matthew 12:14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

Pharisees Are Placed In The “Evil And Adulterous Generation” Category

Matthew 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

Matthew 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

Pharisees Are Offended Easily

Matthew 15:12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

Pharisees Are Not Sanctioned By God

Matthew 15:13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

Pharisees Are Off Limits To Believers

Matthew 16:6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Pharisees Love To Argue

Matthew 19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Pharisees Are Politically Motivated And Violent

Matthew 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

Pharisees Put Themselves On The Same Level With Moses

Matthew 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

Pharisees Don’t Live What They Preach

Matthew 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

Pharisees Make Living For God Hard And Grievous

Matthew 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Pharisees Have Much Pride

Matthew 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

Pharisees Love To Be Honored

Matthew 23:6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

Pharisees Seek Recognition Of Men

Matthew 23:7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

Matthew 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

Matthew 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Matthew 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

Matthew 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

The Seven WOES Of The Pharisees In Matthew 23

Pharisees Are Hypocrites. They Talk About God, But Do Not Love God And Keep Others From Being Saved

Matthew 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Pharisees Are They Are Heartless And Money Hungry, While Acting Spiritual. They Will Be Punished In The Judgment

Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Pharisees Destroy Their Own Converts

Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Pharisees Taught The Law But Didn’t Practice The Law

Matthew 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Pharisees Major On Minors, And Are Spiritually Blind

Matthew 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Pharisees Wear A Mask Of Holiness But Are Full Of Filthiness

Matthew 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Matthew 23:26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

Matthew 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

Matthew 23:28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Pharisees Give False Honor And Come From A Long Line of Preacher Killers

Matthew 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

Matthew 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

Matthew 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

Pharisees As Portrayed In Acts

Pharisees… Can They Be Saved? Absolutely, But It Might Take A Miracle!

Acts 9:1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

Acts 9:2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

Acts 9:3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

Acts 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Acts 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Acts 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

(Paul Seems To Be The Only Recorded Converted Pharisee.)

Things You Make Yourself Do.

with one comment

Things You Make Yourself Do.

When every new recruit steps off the bus, he is met by a drill instructor that tells him immediately, that there are two words he never wants to hear, “I can’t and I won’t.” Because he says, “you can and you will.”

I often see Billboards promoting prostate cancer awareness. They proclaim in no-uncertain terms that thousands of men will die this year because of stubbornness.

The Truth Is: Stubbornness, Excuse-Making and Fear Paralyze Many Of Us. Many Times We Have To Make Ourselves Do What Needs To Be Done.

Dieting

I have successfully avoided thinking about that word for most of my seventy years. I am not saying that I wasn’t packing on some pounds. I am admitting that I just hated the thought of going on a diet.

My lifestyle is such that I often find myself a guest in friend’s homes. The richest foods and the world’s best deserts are spread before me. It is hard to say no. (I sure don’t want to offend the cook.)

For years I’ve told myself that I didn’t have much control over what I ate, but that I could watch my portions. Let me tell you, the portion-watching concept doesn’t work well if the food is really good.

Then, January 2014 hit me like a cattle prod.

  • I couldn’t button my size 48-suit coat.
  • I was running out of air when I preached.
  • I enjoyed putting my own socks on and wanted to continue doing that.

With the help of my close friend, Brother Kenneth Bow, I went on a 500 calorie a day diet. I downloaded apps to monitor every thing I ate, drank and drooled over.

I lost forty-five pounds and can now breathe normally again. I realized it wasn’t that hard after I made myself get started. I Just Had To Make Myself Do It.

My Daughter Keeps A Healthy Distance From The Woods And Wooly Creatures.

My daughter Marisa was raised in a world of four brothers and no sisters. She can hold her own with the best of them. Those that know her are aware of her desire to avoid all animals with fur.

It’s not just a dislike; it’s an emotion that is almost over whelming for her. It has been known to create a moment of sheer panic in her when a raccoon, opossum or mouse is too close for comfort.

This month however, she got a tent and took her children on an all night camp-out in the woods. I was amazed at this young mother of three. She stood up and faced her worst fears. She proved to herself that it wasn’t all that bad. She even sent pictures to the family and we saw smiles on all the faces. It Only Happened Because She made Herself Do It

We Make Ourselves Do Some Things To Over Come Our Personal Fears.

  1. We make ourselves do things because they need to be done and there is no one else to do them.
  2. We make ourselves get up when we don’t feel well and go to work anyway.
  • Mommies do it.
  • Daddies do it.

We Do Other Things Because God Asks Us To.

  1. To repent.
  2. To break up our fallow ground.
  3. To deny our self.
  4. To take up the cross.
  5. To humble our self in the sight of God.
  6. To love not he world.
  7. To forgive 70×7 in one day.
  8. To love our neighbor as our self.
  9. To be Holy

There Are Times We Have To Tell Ourselves To

  1. Obey All Of God’s Word.
  2. Pray through.
  3. Worship when we don’t feel like it.
  4. Pray when we don’t feel like it.
  5. Come to church when you don’t feel like it.
  6. Fast.
  7. Say Amen.
  8. Repent to family members, to others, to God when you need to.
  9. Stay faithful.
  10. Shun the very appearance of evil.
  11. Flee fornication.
  12. Serve.
  13. Witness.
  14. Love.

Sometimes We Just Have To Make Ourselves Be Submissive And Obedient.

Some Characters In The Bible Became Our Heroes Because Of What They Made Themselves Do.

Noah

  • By faith, built an Ark while the world mocked.
  • By faith got in an ark he could not steer.

David

  1. Faced a lion and a bear when he was just a lad.
  2. Face Goliath the giant when he was about seventeen.
  3. Had no one to help him so, he “Encouraged himself in The Lord”

Paul and Silas

  • Sitting in Jail, chained, beaten and bloodied, they made themselves pray and sing at midnight.

The Three Hebrew Children

  • They were faced with the threat of public death.
  • They were commanded to bow and worship a heathen king.
  • They made themselves stand firm to their convictions.

Widow Woman Of Zarephath Gave Her Last Two Cakes To Elijah To Eat

  • She made herself put the man of God first even when she and her son were facing death by starvation.

The Woman With An Issue Of Blood

  • She had tried every doctor she could to no avail until she finally ran out of money.
  • She was nearly too weak to walk, but when Jesus came by, she made herself crawl through the crowd so that she could touch the hem of his garment.

Blind Bartimaus

  • He was told to shut up by those around him and keep quiet after he cried out for mercy.
  • He made himself cry out all the louder.

What Are You Willing To Make Yourself Do To Get Your Miracle?

The Day Of Pentecost

Peter was preaching to a large crowd on the Day of Pentecost. Conviction gripped the hearts of his hearers. They made themselves ask him point-blank while he was preaching what they needed to do to be saved.

Without missing a beat, Peter told them. The requirements he gave that day to be saved are still in effect today.

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Not Everyone Made Themselves Respond.

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Are You Worth Fighting For?

Are You Worth Fighting For?

Kneeling_Warrior_lg

We have all heard uncomplimentary remarks by old timers about those people they considered

worthless and no good. They said things like:

  • “Ah, they’re not worth the lead it would take to blow…”
  • “They’re not worth their salt.”

We have all learned that helping some people can be an exercise in frustration and futility. In choosing our battles and those we fight for, where do we draw a line and fight? When do we throw in the towel?

Go To God’s Word And Examples For Guidance.

Moses – Israel

God was so angry at Israel because of their quickness to backslide, He wanted to kill them and start all over. He told His plan to Moses.

Exodus 32:31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

Exodus 32:32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin–; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

Moses knew the wickedness of Israel and although he could never justify their actions, he refused to give up on them. He told God; if You are going to blot them out, then just blot me out too. Moses fought for Israel even in their disobedience and wickedness.

Moses Persuaded God To Show Mercy.

Samuel – King Saul

1 Samuel 15:10 Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,

1 Samuel 15:11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

Saul was reckless in his life choices and was disobedient to God’s Word. Samuel, even with all his pristine character and godliness, could not help but cry for Saul. Saul wasn’t even crying for himself. Yet Samuel fought with tear all night long.

Pastors – Saints and Sinners

Certainly we can be grateful to live at a time when God’s Mercy is so readily available. Yet, in spite of this, a pastor’s job is never done. He does his best to keep fighting for every soul. He fights for those who want help. He even fights for those who don’t seem to be fighting for themselves.

There Is No Such Thing As A ‘Throw-A-Way Soul.”

Paul – Timothy

2 Timothy 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

2 Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Paul’s advice to Pastor Timothy was, don’t be harsh. These sinful people are their own problem. They can’t blame anyone else but themselves. It just may be that God will let them repent and admit the truth about themselves. It may be that God will let them recover and be restored. So, don’t give up on them. Fight for them. They aren’t doing a very good job of fighting for themselves. They need you.

  • Fight for their souls.
  • Fight for their mercy.
  • Fight for their forgiveness.
  • Fight for their restoration.
  • Fight for their marriage.
  • Fight for their family.
  • Fight for their future.
  • Fight for their eternity.
  • Fight for them…

Remember:

1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Are You Worth Fighting For? Absolutely!

Who Are You To Judge Me? – Repost

with 18 comments

“Who Are You To Judge Me?”

How many times have we heard someone say that, whether it was directed to us or to someone else? It’s easy for most of us to get offended when others express disapproval of our actions.

By nature, most of us are very private. We resent outsiders intruding uninvited into our personal lives. Wegg57234595 automatically throw up a defensive barrier. Somewhere in all of us there is a storage room that houses cryptic phrases designed for rebuttal and justification. We quickly grab one and use it with the hopes of silencing our accuser. Sometimes, it works.

Most church members and ex-church member alike consider the act of judging a grievous fault. So, since most of us have been judged at one time or another, let us look at the subject of judging others.

As citizens, we are used to being judged every day on our skills, behavior, and performance.

Judgment Is Common In Every Day Society

  • Television shows, such as American Idol, judge contestants on their ability to sing and perform.
  • At the County Fair, someone will judge which pie is the best.
  • There are judges at dog shows, and the dollar value of someone’s beloved pet may be at their mercy.
  • When a prospective new driver turns 16 years old, his or her driving ability is judged. Someone must determine if they should be issued a driver’s license.
  • To be promoted to the next grade and even graduate, a teacher must determine the student’s academic ability.
  • To become a licensed minister in an organization. An applicant’s worthiness is determined when he appears before a licensing board.
  • Every new pastor that is voted on by the church has his qualifications judged by the congregation’s yes or no vote. The same holds true for politicians.
  • The Bank Officer judges the applicants credit rating and payment history before loaning any money.
  • The Miss America beauty pageant uses Judges to determine who should represent the U.S.A.
  • There are multitudes of judges for every Olympic event.
  • The gardener judges whether or not the tree’s branches need pruned, or if the tomatoes need watered.
  • Someone will be a judge over who gets custody of the child, and who gets what, in the divorce settlement.
  • The Traffic Cop judges whether or not you should be pulled over and cited.
  • Every employee knows the meaning of a “Performance Review.” Someone must sit on the other side of the desk and judge the employees worthiness.
  • Actually, everyone that wants the bragging rights of being the best, the fastest, or the most gifted, must first meet the judge.

We seem to be comfortable with the idea of being judged according to our fleshly activities. We understand that no one receives approval without a judgment of some kind. However, it’s man’s judgment of our spiritual pursuits, or lack thereof, that brings the fire into our reactions.

Webster Defines The Word, “Judge” As:

Judge

1: to form an opinion about through careful weighing of evidence and testing of premises.

You’re Sick And Tired Of Others Judging You? I Understand. Let’s Look At The Subject Of Judging In The Bible.

Is it true that Christians are told not to judge? The surprise answer is no. In fact, according to Scripture those who do not judge are more likely to be led astray by false doctrines and are less than effective witnesses for Jesus Christ.

Most People Who Cite The Lord’s “Command” Not To Judge, Use Following Quotation:

Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

Matthew 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Matthew 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Matthew 7:4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

Matthew 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

To Whom Were These Words Spoken?

This whole passage is addressed to the religious hypocrites of the day. Jesus warned these self-righteous people who criticized others, but were guilty of the same things… or worse.

You’re Sick And Tired Of Others Judging You? As Much As Our Flesh Doesn’t Like It, Church Members Must Make Judgments.

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

  • False prophets are to be recognized (judged) by their fruits.

Should Christians Judge Each Other? Absolutely!

The Lord is pleased with those that judge righteously.

John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

Some Lukewarm Church Members Feel That A Preacher Should Not Be Their Judge.

I would point them the Lord’s instruction to the Priest Joshua.

Zechariah 3:7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

Remember John The Baptist saying:

Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Mark 6:17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.

Mark 6:18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

  • John had guts enough to tell King Herod that he was wrong, that he was living with his brother’s wife. Herod had John thrown in prison and finally beheaded. John was not afraid to make a righteous judgment.

The Prophet Nathan Looked King David In The Eye And Judged Him.

2 Samuel 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

There Has Always Been Resentment In The Congregation Against Messages That Judge.

Isaiah 30:10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

  • Even in the days of Isaiah, men wanted to be left alone by the man of God. They only were willing to hear smooth preaching. Not much has changed. They wanted to do what ever their conscience allowed them to do.

Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

  • Without accountability, even the people of God sink to this level. The shocking news for our flesh is that what is right in our eyes may not be right in God’s eyes. We all need help. We just need it in different areas.

What About Discernment Of Spirits?

1 Corinthians 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

  • This is a gift that God provided for His body, whereby Holy Ghost filled people may be able to determine what spirit another is manifesting. In a way, it’s like being able to see what’s on the inside of another person.

Try The Spirits. (Judge Them)

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Samuel

The Prophet learned about judging spirits the hard way. He found out quickly that God looked not only on the outside, like humans, but He looked especially at the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

(Note: They that are spiritually wayward love to justify their carnal and maybe even sinful outward appearance by saying that God looks on the heart. (As if that were the only place He looks.) This passage strongly makes the point that God did not even like what he saw on the inside. Maybe the self-righteous should not use this verse as their defense.)

If You Don’t Want Anyone Judging You, Be Glad You Weren’t There When The Apostle Paul Preached.

Paul Judged Situations Publically Without Being Present.

  • Case 1. Immorality

1 Corinthians 5:3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

1 Corinthians 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

(Called a…)

  • That person’s lifestyle resulted in the church judging them guilty and calling them by the name of their sin.

1 Corinthians 5:12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

1 Corinthians 5:13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

  • Case 2. Church Factions During The Lord’s Supper

1 Corinthians 11:17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.

1 Corinthians 11:18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

  • Paul Openly Judged Sensitive Situations.

Judgment Is Required Of All Spiritual People.

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

(The Message) 1 Corinthians 2:15 Spiritually alive, we have access to everything God’s Spirit is doing, and can’t be judged by unspiritual critics.

Spirit Filled Saints Are To Judge All Things.

Godly Spirit-filled saints are required to judge all things. Judge spirits? Yes! Judge things as well? Absolutely!

We Are To Judge All Things By God’s Standard Of Judgment. Things Such As:

  • Life Situations
  • Events
  • Relationships
  • Friendships
  • Music
  • Internet Activities
  • Entertainment
  • Hollywood Presentations
  • Sports
  • False Doctrines
  • Styles of Dress
  • Compromise
  • Immodesty

Just To Name A Few

(Note: EVERYONE that I have seen who re-evaluated their Holiness Standards or Convictions has not grown closer to God or resembled the Old-time Pentecostal lifestyle, but rather moved closer to looking and acting like the present world.)

The Apostles Judged A Situation Correctly And The Holy Ghost Confirmed It.

Acts 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

Paul Wasn’t Afraid To Have His Brethren Weigh His Words.

1 Corinthians 10:14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

1 Corinthians 10:15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

You Dislike Being Judged? I Understand, But Even Prophets Are Subject To Being Judged.

Prophets Judge Other Prophets.

A Prophet’s reward is not money or fame. It is simply that his prophecy comes true. If the prophecy does not come true he is, by all standards of measurement, a false prophet.

1 Corinthians 14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

The Pastor Must Make Judgment Calls.

Some situations a Pastor has to deal with are not mentioned specifically by name in the Bible. So, he must make a judgment call, or a ruling. Hence, they that make good rulings are worthy of double honor.

1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

There’s No Doubt A Good Reason Why Some Make A Loud Noise About Not Wanting Anyone To Judge Them.

Scenario 1

Maybe They Are In Rebellion And Don’t Want To Change.

  • Because they are not doing right, and they do not want anyone reminding them.
  • They know what they have been taught.
  • They remember how they used to live.
  • They chose to ignore the Word of God and the Pastor.

Scenario 2

Maybe God Has Turned Them Over To A Delusion.

  • They feel they are right and will debate you tirelessly in their attempt to justify themselves.
  • They feel saved and content even though they have never been farther away from Truth.
  • They wouldn’t love Truth, so God handpicked their delusion and gave them something they would love. Error.

Scenario 3

A Humble Heart Will Repent When Judged And Correct The Error.

2 Timothy 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

Preacher… Preach The Word. It Is God’s Plumb Line.

  • Preach Without Fear or Favor.
  • Be Not Afraid Of Their Faces.
  • You Must Answer To God For What You Preached And Didn’t Preach.
  • Preach It Even if It Affects Your Friends Or Family.
  • Preach it Because It Is Truth.

Correction Must Be Given When The Actions Of A Saint Are Judged To Be Wrong.

1 Timothy 5:20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

Luke 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

Titus 1:13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

Titus 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

If We Willingly Receive Correction and Instruction, We Show Evidence Of Being God’s Son.

Hebrews 12:5 … My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

Hebrews 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Hebrews 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

Hebrews 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

If You’re Still Sick And Tired Of Others Judging You…

  • How Then Can Anyone Help You?
  • You Don’t Want A Pastor.
  • You Don’t Even Want A True Friend.
  • You Choose To Do What You Want.
  • No One Can Be Helped Without First Being Judged To Be In Need Of Help.
  • Please Don’t Put Up A Wall Of Defense Any More When Your Life Is Judged To Be Not Pleasing Unto God.

Who Are You To Judge Me?

  • A Tender Hearted Person Would Never Speak Those Words.
  • Have You Become Unteachable?
  • Are You Past Help?
  • Have You Become Hard Hearted?
  • Do You Want A Tender Heart?
  • Do You Want To Be Saved?
  • Then Start By Humbling Yourself And Submitting To God’s Word.

Altar Call Songs

with 16 comments

Are You Old Enough To Remember These?

  • My wife Marcia and I put this Altar Call song list together back in 1999.
  • (These may be old songs from at least a generation or two back. But they still work!)

Finding the right song to play and sing for Altar Call is, in my mind, indeed a gift. Not everyone is blessed in that department. More often than not the right song sung at the end of a sermon can make all the difference in the outcome. If the song doesn’t ‘fit,’ if distracts in a noticeable manner.

This generation of musicians seems to have focused on the newer music alone, and not a few have ignored the older songs for altar call altogether. What a horrible loss!

Only the titles of some of the old songs are listed below. They are merely meant to be memory prompts. Either you know them or you don’t. I hope you do.

I thank every musician and singer for making any attempt to keep even a few of our old faithful songs alive.

NEARING HOME
NO ONE EVER CARED FOR ME LIKE JESUS
NO ONE, NO ONE LIKE JESUS
NOW LET US HAVE A LITTLE TALK WITH JESUS
OH FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING
OH LORD HAVE MERCY
OH SOUL AWAY, SOON THE LORD SHALL COME, AND NONE…
OH WHAT A SAVIOUR
OH WHY NOT TONIGHT?
OH, IT IS JESUS, OH IT IS JESUS
ONE DAY TOO LATE
ONE TOUCH OF HIS HAND
ONLY BELIEVE
ONLY JESUS CAN SATISFY
ONLY TRUST HIM, ONLY TRUST HIM
PASS ME NOT
PEACE, PEACE
PENTECOSTAL FIRE IS FALLING
PRECIOUS BLOOD
PRECIOUS JESUS
REACH OUT AND TOUCH THE LORD
RENEW IN ME, THAT 1ST LOVE
SEARCH ME LORD, SEARCH ME LORD, SHINE THE LIGHT OF
SEARCH ME OH GOD
SEND IT ON DOWN, SEND IT ON DOWN
SERVE HIM WITH ALL OF YOUR HEART
SHELTERED IN THE ARMS OF GOD
SHUT IN WITH GOD, IN A SECRET PLACE
SIN CAN NEVER ENTER THERE
SOFTLY AND TENDERLY
SOME GLORIOUS DAYBREAK, JESUS WILL COME
SOMEDAY THERE’LL BE NO TOMORROW
SOMETHING GOT A HOLD OF ME
SPEAK MY LORD, SPEAK MY LORD
SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD, FALL FRESH ON ME
SWEEP OVER MY SOUL
TAKE IT ALL, TAKE IT ALL, WHAT THE WORLD
TAKE UP THY CROSS AND FOLLOW ME
TEACH ME LORD TO WAIT
TELL IT TO JESUS, TELL IT TO JESUS
THANK YOU LORD FOR SAVING MY SOUL
THE CROSS IS NOT GREATER THAN HIS GRACE
THE LIGHTHOUSE
THE LONGER I SERVE HIM THE SWEETER HE GROWS
THE OLD RUGGED CROSS
THE OLD RUGGED CROSS MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
THE UNSEEN HAND
THE WAY OF THE CROSS LEADS HOME
THE WORLD NEEDS JESUS, BUT WHY SHOULD I TELL YOU?
THERE’S A GREAT DAY COMING, A GREAT DAY COMING
THERE’S A SWEET, SWEET SPIRIT IN THIS PLACE
THERE’S NO ONE, NO ONE LIKE JESUS
THERE’S ROOM AT THE CROSS FOR YOU
THERE IS A FOUNTAIN FILLED WITH BLOOD
THERE IS A FOUNTAIN WHICH FLOWS FROM CALVARY
THERE IS A PLACE OF QUIETNESS
THERE IS COMING A DAY
THERE IS JUST NO PLACE LIKE HOME
THERE IS POWER, POWER
THROUGH IT ALL, THROUGH IT ALL…
THROW OUT THE LIFELINE
TO BE LIKE JESUS
TO BE USED OF GOD
TOMORROW
TOUCHING JESUS IS ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS
TRUST IN THE LORD, WITH ALL THINE HEART…
TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS
UNTIL THEN
WASTED YEARS
WE BRING A SACRIFICE OF PRAISE
WE DEDICATE THIS TEMPLE TO YOU LORD
WE HAVE COME INTO THIS HOUSE TO MAGNIFY THE LORD…
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD WE SERVE
WHAT CAN HE DO..
WHEN HE REACHED DOWN HIS HAND FOR ME
WHEN I SEE THE BLOOD
WHEN I WALK UP THOSE STREETS OF GOLD
WHEN JESUS BREAKS THE MORNING
WHERE COULD I GO?
WHERE HE LEADS ME, I WILL FOLLOW
WHERE WILL YOU BE A MILLION YEARS FROM NOW
WHILE I WAS PRAYING, SOMEBODY TOUCHED ME
WHO AM I THAT A KING
WHY DON’T YOU LIFT UP YOUR HANDS AND PRAISE THE LORD
WHY NOT TONIGHT?
WHY SHOULD HE LOVE ME SO?
YES I KNOW, JESUS BLOOD CAN MAKE..
YOU’VE GOT TO LIVE FOREVER SOMEWHERE
YOU CAN’T MAKE ME DOUBT IT….
YOU NEVER MENTIONED HIM TO ME
YOU WON’T LEAVE HERE LIKE YOU CAME

I Didn’t Tell You, Because You Didn’t Want Me To.

with 15 comments

I Didn’t Tell You, Because You Didn’t Want Me To.

The old preacher sat on a rock at the fork in the road. The many years of struggle showed on his face, and in the stoop of his shoulders. He watched as travelers passed him by.

Some of his preacher friends and acquaintances  stopped a moment or two to chat before continuing their journey. Many came in groups, others by themselves, but they all walked down the road.

The children of his friends walked the road too, some of them walked with their parents, others walked alone.

Most everyone nodded in acknowledgement and smiled at him while continuing on their journey. A few stopped and sat on the rock beside him to visit for a while before walking on.

The old preacher noticed that a large number did not hesitate when they came to the fork in the road. They as if by some predetermination chose which path to walk.

There were those who paused and stared at the signposts, as if unsure. One or two fumbled for their map as if to verify which road would be best.

Those who still seemed unsure of which path to choose, changed from looking at the road signs, to looking at the other travellers. If by chance they happened to see a friend that looked like they knew what path to choose, they simply followed without further ado.

Every now and then one of the young travellers that stood reading the signposts turned to the old man for advice.

“Which fork in the road should I choose?” They asked.

The old preacher would look up at their sincere faces and without hesitation point in the direction that he knew was best. Some sneered, and walked down the other road anyway. Some followed his advice.

Occasionally travelers would return to the fork of the road to look at the signs again, as if to confirm their choice.

One young preacher who had walked down the wrong path quite a ways returned to the old man and began to chastise him.

“Why didn’t you stop me? Why didn’t you tell me that was the wrong path? Why didn’t you tell me how much I would lose if I walked down that path? Why didn’t you tell me I was in delusion to believe it was a better road? I thought you were a friend to my family, and me but you didn’t stop me and tell me which road to go! Why?

The old man didn’t get offended. He looked at the son of his friend, and then began.

“You know I love you, I love your father too. You know what road he walked down, but you felt comfortable in ignoring that fact because your friends and popular people have influenced you.

“I noticed you watching me as I pointed out the right way to others. You chose to ignore this old man’s advice.

“The reason I never told you personally which road to walk down is because you never wanted to know bad enough to ask. Maybe you didn’t want to hear the word, NO! I didn’t tell you because you didn’t want me to.

“If I had told you which path to choose without you asking, you would have taken that as an insult to your intelligence. You would have felt I was interfering in your business, so I held my peace as I held my breath.

“Those who ask for direction really want help. Those who don’t ask will soon need help. It’s a mistake of youth to reject the paths of their fathers in serving the Lord.

“You once believed your choices to always be accurate. Your delusion made it feel that it was God that was guiding you, now you have fear and regret because of your great losses. It’s the mercies of the Lord that you have returned to this point.

“The bad news is there are some things you will never regain. But, the final chapter has not been written. Remember hearing your father singing the song, “It’s Not the First Mile”?

“The real question my son, is now that you know which road is right, which one will you choose?”

With a thankful embrace and a sincere apology, the young man turned and walked back to the fork. This time he chose the one marked, “The Old Path.”

“I’m Going To Run Away From Home!”

with 10 comments

“I’m Going To Run Away From Home!”

That’s what I told my mom. I looked at her face and she didn’t seem to be overly shaken by the news, which

Me, Daddy (Carl) & Mama (Content) Ballestero

Me, Daddy (Carl) & Mama (Content) Ballestero 1951

was a good thing for me. So I relaxed a bit. I had already handled the hardest part. I’d made my big announcement. She smiled understandingly at me, as she touched my shoulder.

“Would you like me to help you pack your suitcase?” She asked, still smiling pleasantly.

My seven-year old brain didn’t pick up on the fact that she wasn’t overly shaken or alarmed by my desire to go, and was asking to help me pack.

I quickly accepted her assistance, because I had never packed a suitcase before. Mama was good at packing and always making sure I had everything I needed for trips.

I watched as she put my clothes in the little suitcase. There were enough changes to maybe get me through a whole week, which was good.  She made sure my little Bible and toothbrush were also packed in the suitcase. There wasn’t any room left for my brown teddy bear. I felt a major twinge about that. I hadn’t planned on being that alone.

Mama and I took a final look around my room looking for anything else I might need to take with me. Finding nothing, she closed the lid and handed me the small suitcase.

I stood there a little uncertain about how my goodbye should be handled. Our family was a kissy and huggy kind of family.

Should I kiss and hug her good-bye, or should I just say, “Bye” and leave? I was unsure. Before I had time to figure it out, mama made the decision for me.

“Honey, put down your suitcase right there, because I would like to take you on a tour of the house before you go.”

I sat the suitcase down and followed behind mama as she walked down the hall toward her bedroom. She stopped in the doorway as I joined her, and we both looked into her modestly furnished room.

“Since you are never going to get to see this room again, I thought you might want to see for the last time, where your mommy and daddy sleep at night. This is where you came every night to say your bedtime prayers and get your good night kisses.

“It’s also where you came every morning to get hugs and kisses from mommy and daddy. But, since you’re leaving you’ve probably outgrown all that now, so you won’t have to come back here any more, but I wanted you to see it.”

I took a big gulp. I didn’t want to cry now. I hadn’t expected a tour of any kind. I’d just wanted to runaway.

She then took my hand and guided me to my sister’s bedroom.

“This is where Beverly and your little sister Carlene sleep, take a good look, you’ll never get to see your sisters again. (Beverly was almost six and Carlene was two.)

Mama then guided me by my bedroom and I looked at my teddy bear proudly sitting on my bed. I felt a big twinge.

The tour continued into the kitchen. Mama took great pains to explain to me that this was where she fixed my favorite meals. She also pointed out where I used to stand and talk to her, as she cooked.

“Here is where I made your pancakes, and cooked your favorite meals. In here is where I baked you cookies, pies, cakes and your favorite orange crusted biscuits!” She said as she pointed at the oven.

“You probably won’t be having any biscuits, cookies or pancakes where you’re going. You don’t know how to make those, and you don’t even have anything to make them with, if you did. So take a good look around.”

I hadn’t thought about never having biscuits, cookies or pancakes again. There were some things about running away I evidently hadn’t thought out completely. I got very serious.

We then walked into the dining room and stopped at the foot of the table where I always sat.

“Here is your place at the table, son. It’s going to look awful empty without you in it!”

She let that sink in a moment before we moved on. She pointed at the chairs.

“Here is where your daddy always sits, and here is where Beverly sits, and Carlene sits here, and I always sit over there. Take a good look, Honey, because you won’t ever get to see this table, or eat with us any more.”

I began to feel more alone than I had planned. Mama walked toward the living room, and I joined her looking at the couch and easy chairs.

“Over here is your daddy’s chair. That’s where he always sits during family devotions when he reads us a chapter from the Bible or reads from The Bible Story Book.

“Here is where I always sit, and there is where Beverly and Carlene sit, and over there is where you always sit.

Mama placed her arm around me as we stood side by side looking the room over.

“Well honey, I think that about concludes the tour of our home. I know you won’t ever get to see it again, because you won’t be coming back. But I want you to know and I want you to always remember how much you mommy and daddy love you.

Never forget how much your little sisters love you too. We are going to miss you every day. You will always be welcome here, because we will always love you.”

Then without a lengthy delay she continued her goodbyes.

“Oh, one more thing, I know I’ve shown you all through the house for the last time, but why don’t you kneel down with mama where we always pray for our family devotions and tell Jesus goodbye.

“You probably won’t be talking to Him anymore either.”

Tell Jesus goodbye? That thought shocked me childish mind. I hadn’t planned on telling Jesus goodbye. All I thought I wanted to do was runaway from home.

Without waiting for me to give any verbal response, mama knelt down at the old sofa and began to pray as only my mama could pray.

Mama was one of those precious Holy Ghost filled mama’s that prayed them heart-felt and spirit filled prayers. She never prayed very long without everyone around her knowing she had touched something pretty wonderful in the glory world.

She began to pray fervently, crying quickly and speaking in tongues. This was how mama always prayed, but today’s prayer and her crying took on new meaning for me as I knelt there beside her.

I listened to her crying, and I felt sure I had made my mama cry because I was running away. I listened to her pray and speak in tongues and knew she was surely talking to Jesus.

I had only been on my knees less than two or three minutes when I began to cry. I placed my arm around my mama and pulled myself close to her.

“Mama, I am so sorry for wanting to run away. I’m not going to go anywhere. I’m going to stay home with you.

Please forgive me, mama. I love you. I promise, I will never leave you. I won’t even get married, or nothing. I’m just going to stay with you!”

She slipped her arm around me, and hugged me tightly as she gave me a sweet kiss. And then she went back to finish her prayer time with the Lord.

≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈

By chance have you been thinking lately about running away from Home?

  • Have you been considering leaving the Father’s House?
  • Have you?

Well, before you go, please, please permit me to take you on a tour of the church you’ve been part of for so long.

I want you look with me again at the place where the plan of salvation was first preached to you. I am pointing at the pulpit.

Remember feeling like you had sinned so bad that God would never forgive you? Can you hear your pastor’s voice once again saying that there was no sin you had ever committed that Jesus wouldn’t forgive you of? Remember him trying to give you hope? He was trying to tell you that God loved you no matter what.

I’m sure you remember him saying that you needed to believe in God’s promise, repent of your sins, be baptized in Jesus name, and then receive the gift of the Holy Ghost speaking in other tongues. Just like they did on the day of Pentecost.

Please look right over here at the altar where you first knelt down and repented of your sins. Remember how you felt when you felt you repented that night?

Now, I want you to come with me over to the baptistery and look into the place where your sins got washed away in Jesus name! Remember how clean you felt and how wonderful that experience was?

Then, when you came up out of the water you lifted your hands and God filled you with the Holy Ghost. You spoke in a language you’d never spoken in before! Take a look at this place again and ask your self if the world has anything that matches that.

Oh, see that aisle right there? Remember all the times you shouted, and danced for joy down those aisles?

Remember the night you came up to the front and stood right there in a healing line and God healed you instantly of cancer? The world can’t offer you that.

Look over there at the third pew where you’ve sat all these years. Remember that Sunday night you stood and testified about God healing you? Remember that?

Come over here to this door, look in here. This is the prayer room you always went to before service each night. You fought a lot of battles and won a lot of victories kneeling right there.

Please walk with me down this hall. Here is the Pastor’s office. He sure loves you. Think of the many times he’s given you counsel, direction and encouragement.

I know you’ll never forget how he would pray with you, and for you, before you left the room. I hope you can remember what that was like, because you won’t have anything like that anymore.

Now, we need to come back out into the auditorium and look it over real slow. Let the faces of each one come to mind as you look at where they sat during service. They loved you. They rejoiced and shouted the night you got saved. Those dear people will pray for you daily, when they realize you are gone. They will never give up on you.

Never forget how much you are loved here. We are going to miss you everyday. Don’t ever forget that the Lord truly loves you and gave His all for you!

Well, that pretty much concludes our little tour.

Aw, before you go, why don’t you kneel with me right here where you always pray, and then you can tell Jesus good-bye too…

The News Got Home Before He Did!

The News Got Home Before He Did!

News in Apostolic circles always travels fast! The word of Peter’s visit with Cornelius beat him back to Jerusalem. That was no small feat in itself.

Peter looked at the unsmiling faces of his Jerusalem brethren. These were the men whom he had fished with all night long before. They were his old friends. He had literally spent day and night with them for the last three years, or so. Over there sat Doctor Luke, and there was Matthew the old tax collector. His buddies James and John didn’t even show their usual smiles when he had walked in the room. Accusations were in all of their eyes. No one looked kindly at him.

That fact really did not overwhelm the man on the hot seat. He had grown up in a world of rough and tumble. He was familiar with using fists, and was even known to carry a sword. Today however, the war was to be one of words and opinions.

Firmly entrenched in each of the questioner’s minds was a deep bias and prejudice against every non-Jew. There was no moderator or Judge in the room. Peter was fair game for them all. Today would probably be his last day of honor among them. It all hinged on what Peter had to say.

Everyone felt free to question his activities and his motives. They opened the volley of questioning, with what happened to be their first and last shot.

“Peter, we understand you went into a house belonging to an uncircumcised man and ate meals with him and his family,” someone said.

There it was. Peter was guilty of fraternizing with the Gentiles. He had crossed the line of propriety and decorum. His accusers were quite ready to censor him, maybe even worse.

Peter was tired in body. He had been in Joppa just a few days ago when the Lord had given him the vision of the sheet containing unclean things and had commanded him to slay and eat. After his continued refusal, the Lord had said not to call that which He had cleansed, common or unclean. The Lord then told him that there were men downstairs at the door and he was to go with them.

It was a 36-mile walk from Joppa to Caesarea, the Roman capital city of Judea. The trip had taken all day and was tiring by itself. But, as soon as he had entered the home of Cornelius, they put him right to work. They immediately made him stand up and preach to them about Jesus.

While Peter was preaching, the Holy Ghost fell on everyone in the room and they began to speak in tongues, just like the hundred and twenty did on the day of Pentecost.

When Peter heard them speak in tongues, not only was he astonished, but the Jewish believers with Peter were amazed as well. Peter then commanded everyone that had just received the Holy Ghost to be baptized in the name of the Lord.

He then stayed with Cornelius for a few days to further instruct him and his family in the Scriptures.

The 60-mile journey from there back to Jerusalem was wearisome as well. But still there had been no time to rest.

Immediately upon arriving home, he was put on trial. His ministry was now in question. His motives were under suspicion. His actions were reprehensible to every conservative Jew in the room.

It was his make or break moment. Jesus wasn’t here anymore to moderate the dissention. It felt like the whole New Testament Church was against him.

Peter had never used polish in his approach to anything. He spoke with great plainness of speech. He disarmed his questioners by being candid and straightforward. He told them of his vision, his preaching to the household of Cornelius, and how the Holy Ghost had fallen on them, just like it fell on us.

The countenance of each accuser’s face in the room changed. There it was! God had put his blessing upon the whole event, by pouring out His Spirit.

The Question and Answer session immediately dissolved into a worship service. All of the Apostles worshipped the Lord together. They gave thanks because God had given unto the Gentiles, the privilege of repentance.

Acts 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

The Apostles did not say, “Praise the Lord, twenty-six received the Holy Ghost and twenty-six were baptized.”

They thanked the Lord for Granting Repentance to the Gentiles. They knew, that if the Lord would let them repent, the Gentiles could have anything else that Heaven had to offer. That simple truth is still in effect today. The Goodness of God leads men to repentance. And, If God will let you repent, that means:

  • He has just opened the Door for you to be filled with His Spirit.
  • He has also just opened the Door of Healing and Blessing as well.
  • It matters not what you have said or done.
  • It’s no longer important where you’ve been, or with whom.
  • Once God Grants you Repentance, He has just opened the Door of Eternal Salvation.
  • Take advantage of it today!

It’s A Privilege To Be Able To Repent.

If God Grants You Repentance…

That Alone Is Worthy Of Your Worship!

What Is Your Quality Of Life?

What Is Your Quality Of Life?

According to dictionary.com, the phrase quality of life entered our American language in the early 1940’s. We commonly use this expression to describe the availability of comforts, or the lack thereof.

Auntie Fern

As a seven-year-old boy, I was aware that my Auntie Fern was dying with cancer. She was quite young, but the disease had exhausted her strength. My mind still sees pictures of her sitting in Grandma Gleason’s house at 711 Polk St, Oregon City, Oregon in her special chair.

Auntie Fern smiled at me a lot as she sat covered in her lap blanket. I have no memory of ever seeing her walk, but before the cancer, she always had. She had a beautiful twelve-year-old daughter Carolyn. Cancer quickly takes away what we may have determined to be, our quality of life.

Beverly

My sister, Beverly Anne, was fourteen months younger than me. Problems at her birth complicated the health conditions she was already born with. She was a very sickly child. She was not strong enough to go to school after the fourth grade. She never got to skip rope a day in her life.

Her hair never grew long, her eyes were weak, her nails wouldn’t grow and her broken bones couldn’t mend. Her body produced no calcium.

She never had a boyfriend, or ever went out on a date. She never got a love letter. The lack of calcium, plus other critical health issues occasionally caused her to go into convulsions during the last two years of her life. She kept a bell by her bed to ring for help when she felt another episode coming on.

In her last years, I carried her in my arms from the parsonage to the church every service, and placed her in a special chair at church. Beverly died at seventeen. But she died talking in tongues.

The case can certainly be made about her not having much in the way of any quality of life. But I guess the measurement depends on the yardstick being used.

Daddy

After nearly eighteen years, I still carry the mental images of my Alzheimer’s stricken, father. His world was even further complicated with the addition of Parkinson’s disease.

His seven-year journey into that alien realm was heart breaking to watch. This was the man whose mind was so sharp, he had preached the 1964 UPCI General Conference in San Antonio, using notes he had scribbled on the back of his hotel cleaner’s receipt. Now, he had to be led everywhere. Now, he had to be fed. Now, he had to be dressed. Now, he had to be cared for as a small child, while the disease held him securely in its grasp.

He did not easily recognize his friends or even all of his family.  He soon got to the place where he could no longer carry on any meaningful conversations. Yet, something was still alive in him on the inside.

Some visiting ministers came to see him one time. They talked about the Lord, and about the Oneness of the Godhead. They talked about the Mighty God in Christ. Daddy came out of his mental fog and started quoting ‘One God’ scriptures. Tears flowed as his visitors listened to his words.

When they were ready to leave, they wanted to pray with Daddy. As the prayer started, an invisible switch turned on inside of him. He began to pray with power and anointing. All wept again just listening to him pray. The Holy Ghost filled the room. When the prayer was over, he retreated back into his Alzheimer’s oblivion. On 9/11/1994, we watched as the hands of the Lord led him where no other hand could lead him.

Did he have much in the way of quality of life during his last years? No, not from where you’re standing. No, not from what my eyes or my heart could see either.

Mama

January 13, 2012 my loving sisters and I laid our sainted Mama in the arms of the Lord. Her dementia was different from Daddy’s. Her short-term memory left her a couple of years before she left us. Yet, she still always responded warmly to our affection.

I tried to call her every day, after Daddy died in 1994. The last year, however, it was almost impossible from me to have any meaningful conversation with her on the phone. I tried using Skype video calls, with my sister Nila assisting Mom. Her eyes always lit up when she saw me, she would then tell me that she loved me. When I told her how much I loved her and what a wonderful mother she was, she would smile and say, ” Keep talking, ‘Say some more Honey Baby,’ or ‘Cha La La.”

But… If someone were to start quoting a Psalm, her mind became alert, especially, if Psalms 100 was quoted. She may not even open her eyes, but she would automatically quote the verses with you, or if you paused, she would quote the next verse. She came alive when any Psalm was quoted.

Other than that? Not much, but just sit in her chair all day. No more playing the piano. No more singing. Not eating much either. Just sleeping the day away.

A few days before she died, she had a stroke in the middle of the night. Her fall broke her hip. She was in so much pain. Did she have any quality of life in her last years? Not like you would hope to enjoy.

So, What Does It Mean To Have Quality Of Life?

  • Does it mean good health?
  • Does it mean wealth?
  • Does it mean love?
  • Does it mean living in a good neighborhood?
  • Does it mean having needed amenities in your house?
  • Does it mean living in a nice house?
  • Does it mean owning a new car?
  • Does it mean eating well?
  • Does it mean having nice clothes?
  • Does it mean something that money buys?
  • What does it mean?
  • Does it mean being able to walk?
  • Does it mean being able to speak?
  • Does it mean being able to hear?
  • Does it mean being able to see?

Careful now…

In your mind,

  • Does quality of life mean being active?
  • Does it mean having the strength to exercise?
  • Does it include bike riding?
  • Does it include riding motorcycle riding?
  • Does it include going fishing or hunting?
  • Does it include going shopping?
  • Does it include getting out of the house?

Actually, our definition of the term, Quality of Life is quite different from God’s opinion.

Jesus Said That He Was Life!

John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John 10:10 I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

What the phrase, quality of life, has come mean to me is simply that there is NO quality of life without Jesus! The good news is that He came to give Life, and give it more abundantly!

How do you obtain this supreme Quality Of Life?

The answer is simple. You must be born again of the water and of the Spirit! On the Day of Pentecost, the multitudes asked Peter how to obtain this experience.

Acts 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Quality Of Life really hasn’t much to do with mobility and health, (if we go by the Lord’s standard of judgment.) You may be rich, healthy and wise, and still not enjoy any real Quality of Life… until you’ve met the Giver of Life at an altar of repentance.

  • Don’t Die Until You’ve Received The Holy Ghost… Which Is, Christ In You!
  • There Is No True Quality Of Life Without Him!

That’s What I’m Talking About!

Everyone Deserves To Be Loved!

Everyone Deserves To Be Loved!

I grew up knowing nothing but the blessing of a loving family. Sure we were poor! We lived below the poverty level for years. It didn’t feel like we were poor, because of the warmth of love from family and friends. Not everyone in this world is so fortunate. Not everyone knows how it feels to be loved all your life.

Unwanted Children

UNICEF defines an abandoned child as one who:

  • Does not know where his or her next meal is coming from.
  • Does not know where he or she is spending the night.
  • He or she does not live with either the mother or the father.

While defining a problem is helpful, no definition illustrates the plight of abandoned children as clearly as the following set of statistics:

  • Every 2 seconds, a child becomes an orphan.

Nearly 60,000 children are reported to be abused or neglected each week in America, with an estimated 900,000 confirmations of violence every year. When these children are dumped into foster care, they too often lose not only their childhood, but their dreams, and their futures.

___________________________________________________________________________

  • 40,000 new infants are placed in foster care each year
  • 25 percent of the individuals who end up in prison spent time in foster care
  • 30 percent of all people who are homeless spent time in Foster Care
  • The average number of home placements per child is three
  • Girls in foster care are six times more likely to give birth before the age of 21
  • 50 percent of foster youth are unemployed four years after leaving foster care
  • 37 percent – 48 percent of foster children don’t finish high school
  • Only 7 percent of foster children attend a four-year college
  • Only 1 percent of foster children graduate from a four-year college

Parents Selling Babies

News reporters tell of parents selling babies on the black market. We only know about the ones that got caught.

Battered Wives

One in four women (25%) has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime.

Between 600,000 and 6 million women are victims of domestic violence each year, and between 100,000 and 6 million men, depending on the type of survey used to obtain the data.

Separated and divorced males and females are at a greater risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.

On average, more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in this country every day.

1639 Buried In A Mass Grave This Month

I have grieved all week for the unclaimed bodies that were recently buried in a mass grave. No one claimed them. Most were never missed. Others, family members knew they died, but decided to let the county bury them.

  • The annual mass burial in LA has been a December custom since 1896.
  • The remains of 1,639 people were buried this year.
  • The coroner’s office says bodies of those never claimed are kept in storage for two to three years before being sent to the common grave.
  • There currently are 5,199 people on the coroner’s unclaimed persons list.

Holiday Suicides

The overwhelming feeling of loneliness, weighs heavy. For some, it is too much to endure. (Note: suicide should never an option.)

______________________________________________________________________

All these facts are stark indicators to me of a world without love. True love.

The Most Beautiful Love Anyone Could Ever Experience, Is The Love Of God.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jesus Really Loves You!

  1. Let Him be your Comforter

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

  1. Let Him Be That Friend That Sticketh Closer Than A Brother.

Proverbs 18:24 …there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

  1. He Loved Us First! Even, While We Were Sinners.

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

There is a precious old song that still brings tears to my eyes. It’s called, “No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus.”

“No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus”

Words and Music by C.F. Weigle

I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus,
Since I found in Him a friend so strong and true;
I would tell you how He changed my life completely,
He did something that no other friend could do.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

All my life was full of sin when Jesus found me,
All my heart was full of misery and woe;
Jesus placed His strong and loving arms about me,
And He led me in the way I ought to go.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

Ev’ry day He comes to me with new assurance,
More and more I understand His words of love;
But I’ll never know just why He came to save me,
Till some day I see His blessed face above.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

________________________________________________________________________________

He Loves You, Even When No One Else Does.

  • He’s Been Waiting A Long Time For You To Love Him Back.
  • His Love Is Unconditional.
  • His Love Never Ends!

Everyone Deserves To Be Loved. That’s How God Thinks!
