“If I Can Just Make It Through Today…”
“If I Can Just Make It Through Today…”
How often have we met someone who was at their wit’s end? Their pain and problems maybe obvious to their family and friends. Yet there is always that unspoken deeper pain that they don’t freely share, that drives that last nail in their coffin.
With much anguish, and often with tear rimmed eyes, we have heard someone make the remark… “If I can just make it through today.”
Every day life and every day people can be overwhelming even on good days. Yet no one can truly know how much heartache their friend or family member feels when their world crashes around them.
We may have sympathy and maybe even empathy for their situation. Most of the time however, we just stand helplessly on the sidelines and watch.
Sometimes we offer words, sometimes we formulate a plan of action to help them, but too many times, we just say we’ll pray. God knows some of our praying for others is sadly without much sincerity or desperation.
Yet, to those who face things that are so overwhelming that they feel hopeless. To those that feel the unbearable pressure of life’s worst problems crushing the very life from them, I have a good word for you today.
Deut. 33:25 …and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.
God WILL give you enough strength for today. Trust Him. Tomorrow? He’ll give you enough strength for tomorrow too. God ALWAYS comes through.
I Hope You Brought Your Lunch
“I Hope You Brought Your Lunch”
While that comment is normally made in jest, it is made here in great earnest.
The Bible story of Jesus feeding 5,000 men, besides the women and children, started out very simple. They were all hungry.
- No food was in sight.
- No manna fell on the ground.
- No food was catered in.
- No one knew what to do, except Jesus.
He asked them if anyone had any food. The Disciples made inquiries and discovered that some kid had brought his lunch and some cbd dog treats for his dog. What were the others thinking when they left home that morning?
Just one kid out of the thousands of listeners had brought his lunch.
- It was his lunch that was the very foundation for a miracle.
- It was his lunch that Jesus blessed.

- It was his lunch that fed not only him but also everyone else.
- It was his lunch that was the focal point of the day.
- It was his lunch that blessed the hungry.
- It was his lunch that he carried when no one else carried one.
- It was his lunch that stood out.
- It was his lunch that Jesus called for.
- It was his lunch Jesus held in His hands.
John 6:9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
John 6:10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
John 6:11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
John 6:12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
It is possible to be intimidated by those we worship with at our church. People will sometimes stare and whisper because we are the only ones that brought our lunch.
Unspiritual people make a habit of coming before the Lord with nothing in their hands. According to this passage of Scripture, If all of us come with nothing, we all quite possibly may leave with nothing as well.
Any one of us could be the key to a miracle today in God’s House. Even if all we have is a little homemade, nothing fancy, lunch.
What did you bring today?
I Hope You Brought Your Lunch!
What Would It Take To Encourage You Today?
What Would It Take To Encourage You Today?
- A word spoken in faith?
- A pat on the back?
- A smile?
- A money gift?
- A present?
- A word of affirmation?
- A friend’s visit?
- A helping hand?
What makes you tick? What puts a smile back on your face that makes your eyes smile too? What would it take to make your heart feel uplifted?
If you are one of those people who has everything and is still not happy, I don’t think I can offer any help here.
I’m just asking those who have had some bad days lately, or maybe some bumps in your road. Maybe there has been a major disaster in your home, your health or your finances. What would it take to encourage you today?
I really wish I could offer everyone encouraging words that I have thought up on my own, but I cannot. The good news however, is that God’s Word always offers encouragement.
The Bible mentions that David even encouraged himself in the Lord. In your case, that might be easier said than done. My refuge and help most often comes from God’s Word.
I am one of those simple guys that from my youth visited the little box on our mantle that had God’s promises printed on little cards. I would draw one out and read it, claiming it as mine for the day. Did you ever do that?
Here, let me draw some out for you and I’ll look to see if I can see a smile of hope on your face again.
Isa. 40:29-31 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Psa. 46:1-3 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
Psa. 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Psa. 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
Rom. 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Phil. 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
2 Cor. 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Psa. 138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.
Psa. 37:23,24 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
Psa. 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Psa. 9:9,10 The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
2 Cor. 4:8,9 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
Prov. 18:24 …and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Deut. 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
Prov. 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Prov. 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
1 Pet. 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Ex. 15:26 …for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
Heb. 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Thank God For His Promises!
Oh, And There All Yours Too, You Can Have Them All!
Surviving Your Nightmare
Surviving Your Nightmare
Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair. Worse than that, events happen that knock your feet out from under you. The pain is like a nightmare that won’t stop. Thank God we have the Holy Ghost, a church, a pastor, a Bible, family and friends to help us through. Job didn’t.
What happened in the book of Job is hard for human minds to fathom. The book starts out with a special meeting. The sons of God came before the Lord. Satan came also.
The Lord asked Satan where he’d been and what he’d been doing, then the next question He asked was, “What do you think about my servant Job?
Unbeknown to Job, he was God’s favorite person in the whole world. Being God’s favorite has the greatest of benefits. God loved him so much He put a hedge around him.
Satan was sure that Job only served God for the financial blessings. God gave Satan permission to find out for sure.
Satan’s First Day Of Trying To Destroy Job.
Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
Job 1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
Job 1:10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Job 1:11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
Satan took Job’s most prized possessions in one day.
- His Beloved Children
- His Herds
- His Wealth
- All Gone in One Day
Satan’s Second Day Of Trying To Destroy Job.
Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
Job 2:2 And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
Job 2:3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Job 2:4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
Job 2:5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Job 2:6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
Job 2:7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
Job 2:8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
Satan Attacked Job physically. He couldn’t make him curse God by destroying his possessions and his family. He was still reeling from the loss of his children and his financial empire. But Satan wasn’t done. His second attack on Job was physically and emotionally. Physically with the boils, and emotionally with critical ‘friends.’
- Boils
- Critical And Fault Finding Friends
By this time, Job is feeling pain in every part of his body and soul. His own wife pushes him to reject God. She has had it with living for God. Job was not a weak man and would not budge.
He kept trusting God and said, Job 13:15 “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.”
Job vowed to maintain his ways. He promised God he would keep on doing what he’s always been doing… serving the Lord.
In the end, God blessed Job with double what he had before, yes and double the number of children too.
There may be days in your walk with God that you feel what you are going through is an attack from Satan. You may be very well right.
I can only imagine how devastating it is to feel the cold icy hands of Satan trying to destroy you in your labor for the Lord. I am sure it is very easy to focus on the pain he has inflicted upon your life. Pain comes in many forms, such as the loss of finances, the loss of health, the loss of friendships, and the loss of life. It is a very personal nightmare to watch him tear down everything you have built.
On top of all the pain that Satan brings, he will talk trash to your mind as well. He will tell you that you are, “Out of the will of God. God hates you. You have sinned in the past and this is God’s judgment upon you. You are not qualified to be in the work of the Lord. Get out now.”
He will push you to resign whatever office or position you have in the Kingdom of God. He will tell you to withdraw and lick your wounds. He will tell you that you are not loved or appreciated either.
Satan plays dirty. He is not a gentleman. He will kick you when you are down. He did it to Job, and Job didn’t even have the Holy Ghost.
I am not sure that Job even knew he was God’s favorite man in the whole world. I don’t think that he even knew God had his picture hanging on heaven’s wall. Job didn’t know he was heaven most prized earthly possession. All Job knew about was the pain. He hurt so bad, that pain was all he could see.
To those of us today who feel the harshness of Satan’s handiwork in our lives, I wish to remind you of these things:
- Don’t believe Satan’s Lies.
- God does not hate you. In fact He loves you dearly.
- If pain and problems mean you are out of the will of God, then the Apostle Paul never was in the will of God.
- Job was God’s favorite and he still went through this and God brought him out victorious.
- God’s loves you. You enjoy a better relationship with Him than just being on in His list of Favorites, You are His Child.
- He will bring you out victorious, just like He did Job.
- God knows what you are going through. He has not forgotten where you are.
- He will bring you out
- He will give you back all that the enemy has taken from you… and more!
You Are God’s Favorite Child, In Spite Of What Satan Does.
God Has A Hedge Built All Around You.
It’s God Who Is In Control Of Your Situation.
Be Faithful Like Job, And He Will Bring You Through Your Nightmare.
You Will Survive, In Jesus Name!
God Will Take Care of You
God Will Take Care of You
The Don McNeal Breakfast Club was on the air. Mondays through Fridays it could be heard at 10:00am on ABC. I was listening on this particular morning in the Spring of 1965, but I was having a bad day. It was a horrible Monday so far. Nothing had gone right. Little things had gone wrong all morning. There didn’t seem to be any sign of improvement either.
I was 21 years old and had been evangelizing full-time for two years. The freezing cold wind drove the rain almost sideways as I made my way from Texas to Columbia, Mississippi. I was scheduled to preach two weeks for a Bro. Thornton.
The rain was bad enough. To make matters worse, I barely had enough money for gas because they didn’t pay me very much at my last revival.
With only about 40 miles to go, I threw a rod in the 1961 VW Beetle I was driving. I was devastated. I had no money for engine repair. Neither did my Dad. What was I going to do?
It was hard to listen to the patter and laughter on the Breakfast Club with the engine making such a loud racket. I felt sick to my stomach with despair. I babied the car along the best I could at 35 miles an hour.
About that time, the Breakfast Club featured a young lady singing the Hymn of the Day. The song was entitled, “God Will Take Care Of You.”
When she started to sing, I couldn’t drive another hundred yards. I pulled the car over and listened to the words of the song. Tears streamed down my face all the while. God had spoken to my problem right while it was happening!
God Will Take Care of You
By Civilla D. Martin, 1904
1. Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath his wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.
Refrain:
God will take care of you,
Through every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.
2. Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.
(Refrain)
3. All you may need he will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you.
(Refrain)
4. No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon his breast,
God will take care of you.
(Refrain)
In the middle of what felt like nowhere, God gave me a word of promise from an unlikely source that he would take care of me.
I did make it to Columbia, and I preached the revival meeting for Brother Thornton. I sold the car at an auto auction, and was able to buy another car and continued on.
He’s an on time God!
Yes, God still takes good care of me even now! And He has refresher courses too lest I forget.

With A Storm This Bad, It’s Hard To See Jesus
With A Storm This Bad, It’s Hard To See Jesus
“Carest Thou Not That We Perish?”
More times than we wish to remember, life hasn’t always been smooth sailing. The journey that had been uneventful up to this point is now interrupted by sheer panic. What do we do? Where do we turn? How do we cope? How do we survive? The answers to those questions, for the disciples, were found in Jesus.
- Mark 4:36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
- Mark 4:37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
- Mark 4:38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
- Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
- Mark 4:40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
There are times when even professionals can’t help themselves. This was their boat. They were commercial fishermen. They knew these waters. They could handle a boat like this. It was the unexpected that caused them to panic now. All it would take was one good storm to sink them and they knew it. They looked at the size of the waves with increasing fear. They just knew this was the end.
- A great storm of wind and waves was beating into the boat.
- The fierceness of the wind was unbelievable.
- The waves were very high.
- The boat rocked.
- Water was coming over the sides.
- It was just a matter of time.
All along they had known that Jesus was on board. They all knew that he had performed unbelievable miracles. Now was the time when they needed a miracle. This storm didn’t look like one that could be survived.
- They looked at the storm.
- They looked at their boat.
- They looked at each other in their despair.
- They looked at Jesus and wondered why He hadn’t done something by now.
- They looked back at the storm.
- With a storm this bad it was hard to keep their eyes focused on Jesus.
- They couldn’t see Jesus for the storm.
- They couldn’t understand why He didn’t recognize their need.
- They were pained by His lack of response to their need.
- Was He waiting for them to go to Him?
- If He knew everything, why didn’t He fix this problem for them?
Finally, they got to the point where they could no longer be polite or considerate. They were desperate. They woke Him up.
If the storm wind is howling, and the boat is rocking it will take more than a tap on the shoulder or a whisper to wake Him up. They would have to holler above the sound of the wind to be heard. Or they would have to jostle Him more than the rocking boat for Him to be roused. Whatever it took, they did it successfully.
Jesus arose (When God stands up something is going to happen.) and He rebuked the wind and said to sea, “Peace, be still.” And immediately there was a great calm.
He then chided them for not having faith in Him.
Question?
Is this story Descriptive or Prescriptive?
- Is it just ‘describing’ a story about a day a long time ago or is it written in His Word to ‘prescribe’ hope for you in your storm today?
Answer!
It was more than just a feel good story. It’s a story that I can place myself into. It’s a story for you to insert yourself inside.
Your storm may overwhelm you today. Your storm may be one of:
- Financial emergency
- Serious health concerns
- Relationship problems
- Spiritual oppression
- Chemical dependency
- Emotional upheaval
- Whatever the storm, be comforted that the Peace Speaker is in the boat.
He rebuked the wind, the cause of the problem. I am not sure what He said to the wind. But it stopped immediately.
He then spoke calmness to the sea. It laid down like a rug on the ground.
God will rebuke the storm for you today. He will speak Peace to your troubled waters. He will say the word that brings an end to your storm!
Verse 36 mentioned that there were other little boats following them. I would hate to be in any of life’s storms without Jesus in my boat.
Be encouraged today. Why are ye so fearful? Jesus is in your boat! He’s standing up even now!
It Always Happens At Church Time
It Always Happens At Church Time
Why do the worst things happen about church time? It keeps some folks from coming, makes others have to leave and disrupts the service. it’s no accident. Read these references and see a pattern.
Israel was required to have a morning and evening sacrifice. That was their custom.
- Num. 28:3 And thou shalt say unto them, This is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto the LORD; two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering.
- Num. 28:4 The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at even;
From Scripture we know that the ordinary services of the sanctuary consisted of the morning and evening sacrifices. According to general agreement, the morning sacrifice was brought at the “third hour,” corresponding to our 9am. This may explain how on the day of Pentecost such a multitude could so readily “come together,” Seeing it was the third hour, they would all be in the temple.
- The Morning Sacrifice was about 9:00am
- Josephus puts the evening sacrifice down at the ninth hour or 3pm.
Elijah stopped the pagan worship on Mt. Carmel at the time of evening sacrifice.
- 1Kings 18:27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
- 1Kings 18:28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
- 1Kings 18:29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
Goliath came to threaten, challenge and intimidate the people of God, every morning and evening.
- 1Sam. 17:16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
- Goliath came at church time.
- He knew he was being disruptive.
- The Israelites were trying to have church.
- He kept on intimidating them.
- The devil trying to hinder a church service is nothing new.
- It’s an age-old tactic. Every service has it’s own battle.
- Don’t be intimidated, or lose heart.
- Goliath will come, but we’re not ignorant of his methods.
- Keep on singing.
- Keep on praying.
- Keep on shouting.
- Keep on preaching.
- Be encouraged.
- The same God the helped David will help you get the victory!
- Yes Goliath may come, but he will be defeated.
In Jesus Name!
She Laughed Her Way Through Her Trial!
She Laughed Her Way Through Her Trial!
Southern California in 1958 seemed like another world to me. I should have been used to traveling and changing towns. This place had a different “feel” about it. But I knew I would adjust. At 14, I had already gone to 21 schools. My Dad, Carl Ballestero, had been an Evangelist or Pastor all my life. Moving almost seemed normal to us.
Daddy had just resigned the little storefront church he had started in Yakima, WA. He had gotten a letter from a pastor he knew requesting he come and take his church as he was going to the mission field.
Our family of seven was crammed into the two door 1948 Pontiac. A small tarp covered utility trailer holding everything we possessed in the world was hitched to the bumper. We looked like Gypsies, I’m sure.
When we arrived at the Pastor’s home to present ourselves, a shocked look came into his eyes and he said, “Oh Brother Ballestero, I am so sorry, I’ve changed my mind and I decided to stay. I meant to write you and tell you not to come.”
My Father smiled and thanked him as he turned back to the car trying not to let dismay or discouragement show on his face to his family. We drove down the road a ways and turned a corner and stopped the car. Daddy and Mother had to decide what we were going to do next.
We had nowhere to go. Daddy only had $85 cash left. My four little sisters seemed too young to understand the crisis. There was not enough gas to go another 100 miles.
Daddy bought a newspaper and he and Mom read the “houses for rent” section of the classifieds. There was a converted duplex in National City that might work. The price was $80 a month. The last line said “no children.” We went to look anyway.
Daddy said that he knew the Pastor in National City, a Brother Leaman Reynolds. I’d never heard of him. Mom said maybe we could attend his church while Daddy Evangelized for a while.
When we arrived at the rental house, the landlady was waiting. When she saw us 5 kids, she promptly told Daddy that children were not allowed.
“Do you need me to drown them for you?” was his response.
She looked us over carefully and smiled and then agreed to let us rent the house. Now, we had $5.00 left. We drove to town and Dad talked the Utility Company into turning on the water and electricity for $5.00.
The car and trailer got unloaded quickly. There were no beds, so pallets were made on the floor. I went behind the Safeway Grocery Store and found 4 wooden orange crates by the trash bin. We took a closet door off and laid it on the orange crates to make a dinning room table of sorts. We didn’t have any chairs. The good news was, the crates made the table a comfortable height for those sitting on the floor.
The first morning, I was awakened by feminine shrieks. The previous renters had lived in the house with 16 dogs. (We’d found out later.)
My little sister’s arms, legs and torsos had flea bites everywhere. All of us were bitten. The fleas were still visible and so thick that mom got her vacuumkoo.com cleaner and took the hose and vacuumed the fleas off of our bodies.
When that chore was finished, we turned our eyes to Mom. She said to Dad, “Carl, we don’t even have a quarter to buy flea powder. But God said in Malachi, that if we would pay our tithes, He would rebuke the devourer for our sakes. Now honey, we’ve paid our tithes, so let’s get down here on the floor and ask God to rebuke these little devourers for our sake.”
And pray we did. Or, at least pray Mom and Dad did. Most of us kids just scratched with our eyes closed. I think we scratched more than we prayed. Mom has always been one of those Holy Ghost women that can go from “0” to “100” in 3 seconds. It didn’t take Mom long in pray before we heard her shift gears and move on out to the “Glory World” in God.
I don’t remember what she said, but what I do remember is that, when that 15-minute prayer meeting was over, the miracle had already happened. From that moment till we moved out over a year later, there were no more fleas found in that house!
Mother had brought a large bag of Pinto Beans down from Washington. A 50 lb. sack, if I remember correctly. The beans provided or only source of food for about a month. There was no salt, pepper, or ham hock to season with. We all drank tap water and felt happy for that. Beans three times a day. The current generation, with their luxuries from the WaterSoftenerGuide, we had none of that and it made us strong mentally.
When we gathered at the makeshift dinner table for supper. We folded our legs and sat on the floor. Mom announced the menu every evening and came around one by one and asked the same questions of us all.
“Tonight Darlings, we have:
- Fried Chicken?
- Roast Beef?
- Swiss Steak?
Which would you like?”
“Oh, I’d like some chicken,” I said.
“Great choice! Do you want white meat or dark meat?” was her next question.
When I said I wanted white meat, Mom put a spoonful of beans on my plate.
“Do you want:
- Baked potato?
- Fried potatoes?
- Mashed potatoes?
When we answered, Mom would put another dollop of beans on our plate. If we chose mashed potatoes, she would put a few more on that pile saying it was gravy.
Then she asked, do you want:
- Corn on the cob?
- California blend?
- Fresh snapped green beans?
Another pile was added regardless of our choice.
The salad menu often included:
- Garden salad (Dressings required additional beans)
- Caesar salad
- Cottage cheese and pears
Mom smiled and we laughed together as she served our supper. It was funny to us to say we wanted one thing and then be served another.
There always was a saucer beside our plates. The saucer served as a dessert plate.
Every night, we got to choose between things like.
- Chocolate cake
- Banana Pudding
- Strawberry Shortcake
When she finished serving us there were often 4 or 5 piles of beans on our plates, not counting our dessert.
Mama made us smile at mealtime as she used her imagination to lighten the reality of life.
One afternoon after a month or so, a grocery store delivery truck backed up to our door. The driver looked at his delivery receipt and asked if this was the Ballestero residence. When we said it was, he opened the back door of the bobtail truck and there were sacks and sacks and more sacks of groceries.
Mother told him there must be some mistake, because we hadn’t ordered any groceries.
He looked at the delivery order again. And then said, “It says here the groceries have paid for by someone named: Anonymous. Over two hundred dollars worth paid in full. And they are to be delivered to the home of Carl Ballestero.
We cried with joy as the sacks of food covered the table, the counter, and the floor. We didn’t even know what to eat first. But what we did first was thank the Lord.
As a result of my Mom’s attitude during hard times, I was a full-time evangelist for over two years before I knew what a trial was. Mom had made our journey through hard times seem so fun and enjoyable, I didn’t know it was a trial. I thought everybody lived like that! She showed us that, “attitude was not something, attitude was everything.”
Thanks Mom! You’re the Best!
